I've been reading the previous posts on which gauges are useful. I talked to a vendor that claims that autometer gauges are not recommended.

Does anybody here have experience with this brand? I'm looking for a second opinion.

If not Autometer, what other brands would you recommend?

Thanks.

Let me guess, the vendor is some import shop that doesn't even have a race car.

Take a look at speedvision or any racing show. You know when they have those on board camera on the race cars. Look at the dash board of those race cars. Autometer is all you see. If you have a Greddy or Apex i and it fails. You will have to wait months for it to get repair. Autometer is will replace your failed parts in less than a week.

Autometer is the popular brand....

Of course you can buy other gauges from others like Greddy, VDO, summit racing, HKS. Autometer gauges are well priced also the failures that occur are usually due to the nylon tubing supplied with the kit. While expensive gauges like Greddy and HKS use hoses (you can buy reinforced tubing from home depot for cheap). Also the greddy and HKS guages are in metric's not english units. So unless you know how to convert the metric values quickly the autometer gauges are easy to read. As far as useful gauges, I think water temp, oil pressure are important. For automatic's a tranny temp would be nice. For boosted cars Boost, EGT, oil psi/temp, water temp would be ideal. Hell if your board or need another guage put in a nice A/F one.

Speaking of Autometer Gauges . . .

I've got a couple of 2" Ultra-Lite Silver Face gauges I'd like to sell. The first is a Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge, Model 4321, and the second is a Voltmeter, Model 4391. The Oil Pressure Gauge is brand new in the original shrink-wrapped packaging. The Voltmeter is used but in perfect working condition. I'll take $50.00 for both. Send me an e-mail if you're interested.

I use Stillen Boost gauge. DOnt know who makes them but it is working fine. I also use the Greddy EGT. It is supposedly electronic or something like that. No wonder it cost me an arm and a leg. I think I paid like 300 for both.
They both look very nice and I have had no problems what soever.

i have all Apexi gauges. EGT, Fuel pressure, Water Temp, and boost. All are electronic gauges cept for boost. Their EXPENSIVE but they look really nice. have Warning level, Peak hold, and 30 sec memory. Their back lit indiglo. Retail on these i think are around $350 each. i think Autometer gauges are best for their price. Also, the Apexi ones are in metric so if you cant read it i wouldnt recommend you getting metric gauges.

i have my warning set at about 780 degress Celcius. Ive hit up to 950 degrees...hehehe but that was when i blew my head gasket! i regularly see 800+ EGT's but my car is really out of tune. Once i get the new motor in and everything tuned, ill be keepin it around 780 range. I think 777 degrees is optimal...what EGT's do you run?

Looks like I can lean out a bit more if 777 is optimal? I was told by SGP Racing not to go much higher than 700. You feel 777 is safe to consitantly run as a max temp?

woah, your in the 600's?? thats pretty low for Max temp. The general rule is 1487 degrees fahrenheit,(if i remember correctly)for optimal A/F ratio. Yes, i do feel its safe to run up to about 790 as a MAX temp. I regularly do this and have no probs. Except for my 1 trip to the 900's. The motor ddint like those temps.
My friend's turbo Eclipse/Talon runs 770-790 Celcius. Supposely the melting point for the pistons on those are 850?? Another friend runs 780 Celcius on his Z for over 6 years and 50k+ hard miles still running good.

Doooooo!!!

I hadn't driven the car in a few days b/c cause I'm on vacation. I was wrong about my EGT's, they run...

760c-780cNA max
790c-800cNOS max

So I'm in the ballpark for temps!

Thanks!

5" Autometer tach

it took my import shop the whole day to hook up my Autometer tach. and it tripped the check engine light. compared to factory tach it reads about 300 rpm less. dont know which to believe but i always use the factory to watch revs but i use the big tach for its shift light.
