Check the transmission?

I am sorry this is off topic but it is car related.

I was going home with some friends (they have a Toyota Rav4)

And for some reason the first one asked the second to put the car in neutral, and then back into drive, but she put it into reverse by mistake instead of drive. She then preceded to accelerate in reverse while going 70mph. Of course then they realized, So they put it back in drive, and there was no power, accelerator was non functional. We pulled into the outside emergency lane and turned off the car, turned it back on, shifted to D, no power, 1,2, no power. SO we waited 5 minutes and finally got it working again.

Now the question is. Is the transmission f***** because of this, or did it just overheat and they wont need to worry about it?
I said to definitely get it checked out, but i dunno, it's the logical thing to do....
