Fuel Filter = bad performance??

Can a fuel filter with close to 60k on it make my motor perform badly?? rough idle, hesitation off the line, etc...

thanks,

Anthony

yes.. its kinda like a dirty air filter.. just like clean air and low amounts of air would be getting to the engine.. same thing applies to the fuel filter.. it also lowers gas mileage..

when i changed my FF the car had better gas mileage and pulled harder

Just a question, doesn't changing your fuel filter give you worse fuel mileage. Since you are installing a new filter that allows gas to flow to the engine more freely then a older more clogged up one.

just because you can get more of something, doesnt mean you'll be using more. once you have a clean filter, it makes it easier to bring fuel in. therefore, a cycle that, with a dirty filter required 2X amount of fuel, with the new filter may only require X amount.

Check your throttle body. I bet it is dirty too. When I looked at my wifes Maxima I was disgusted. I cleaned it out with a rag and a toothbrush and the low idle problem went away. It also shifted harder than a motha!

Im having Nissan put a 300ZX OEM filter in, its bigger than the maximas. I broke 2 spark plugs in the engine, so this is a good time for me to change it while its at the dealer. 77k miles and I think I still have the origional.

Be honest now, are you a senior exec at K&N?

They claim the filter works better as it gets dirty. Fantastic, genious marketing! I fell for it and bought the filter and cleaning kit! Wouldn't want to hurt my engine by putting in a clean genuine Nissan filter now, would i?

Are there any advantages to putting the 300ZX filter in? Is there any extra steps I have to do to put one of these in? Is it worth it over the stock one?
Thanks,
-Cyrus

They claims that it filters better, not more. As the dirt accumulates on the filter, it makes the mean pore size drop, so smaller dirt particles are more likely to be stopped by the filter. However, the pressure drop across the filter rises, as the mean free path for air increases because the apparent filter width increases.

In summary: more dirt = better filtering, lowered performance.

I assumed he was talking about a K&N air filter, not a fuel filter.

Where the reasoning doesn't make sense is more dirt = closer to being clogged, how is it better filtering? A clean element would have to allow dirt to pass through if more dirt is preferable to less. Lowered performance, it's true but why turn to the aftermarket to achieve that? Just hang around your local Nissan garage before their trash gets hauled away and get some dirty air filters.
