95GLE w/200,000 miles: Should I buy?

Know a guy who who wants to sell his 95 Gle. We work for the same company, his job intails ALOT of travel'n. Says the miles are mostly highway miles. Considering his job, Im inclined to believe him. I've driven the car, looked in the engine bay, played the radio, popped the trunk ect...ect... Everything looks fine, car drives like mine when I first bought it. Say's he'll give me it for below blue book value. He dosn't know it yet, but Kelly blue book is around 5,400.

My wife needs a car. What do you guys think?

Don't think he has much stock in Maxima longevity. Even so.....how much more fun could one expect from a 200 plus Max? Another 100,000 maybe?

200k is almost 3 times your current mileage. The car runs great though. How is your five speed holding up?

That's assuming you can put it in yourself, and if something is wrong with it, put the labor in to remove it and ship it back to the seller. I used to enjoy that stuff when I had 4 extra hands and we were talking 4-cyl Volvo 240's. If it were me, I would not buy a Maxima assuming the motor may need to be replaced. The way I see it is a car with potential motor troubles is worth 0, as I'm not in the restoration biz.

Good luck anyway, but I'd look for a 95 at that price and with maybe 100-120k on the odo. Anything pre-98 and there may have been tampering.

I've had motors replaced twice in my life....both were not in maximas though. One was a S10 blazer and other was a T-bird SC. Both were around $500-600 labor to have replaced. Also, both had tranny problems after new motor was installed. just something to think about.

Try to find out if he kept n things like tune ups, oil changes etc in the life of the car. Also pull codes from the ECU to see if a knock sensor issue or anything is in there.

No way. There is another post (in the 5th gen forum) where 2ks with 40k miles are at about $11000-$12000 The extra $7k buys a LOT of miles. Lets say a Max is good for 230000 miles (if you are real lucky). Your 95 Max gives you 30000 miles for $5000 (16 cents per mile). A 2K with 40k miles for $12000 will give you 190,000 miles for $12000 ( 6 cents per mile). You can be pretty sure that 100k of those will be mostly carefree cruising. There is no comparison.

200,000 is gettin pretty much up there. My uncle just bought a black on black 97 5 speed se (i think) bose, sunroof, fogs, stuff like that. It had 93,000 miles and he picked it up for 4850 or so. The only thing wrong is the tach- its screwed. It also came with those "Assasin" wheels or whatever they're called, and some low-profile tires. But he doesnt care TOO much for chrome and stuff, he just needs it to comute. Pretty sweet deal.

I think you should talk him down to a lower price. But like others have said- If the engine goes, you can drop a very low miled one in there, and have the car goin for many more years.....whatever you choose to do- good luck!
