I'd say one of my recent favorites to get pumped is "Hero's of our past" by the Dropkick Murphys; it's powerful musically and lyrically

For Cruising: Social Distortion; The Boss; Johnny Cash

Chilling: Slackers; Ska and Roots Reggae

I can’t say for sure if Rawkus is out of business but I did hear that they are bankrupt. I don’t know if you follow the **** Peddlers and the High & Mighty, but if you do, you’ll notice that the High & Mighty’s second album, Air Force One (I think that’s the title) was released on Landspeed Records instead. Two of my good friends are DJ’s/Producers out in Philly and they attributed to Rawkus’s financial problems. I hope that I’m wrong. If I’m not wrong I’m really hoping that they can get out of the red. That label was a breath of fresh air in the otherwise thugged-out, champagne-drinking, benz-driving, crack selling and gun toting world of hip-hop.

I agree... Rawkus had the artists, but knew **** about what to with them. The Lyricist Lounge concept (compilations and tv show) should have taken off, but rather than promoting it, they just produced it and let it sit there. I guess $$$ (Rupert Murdoch's son ran the label) doesn't buy everything. I am hoping some of the new comeback artists (Rakim, Kane, Large Pro, etc.) will bring some creativity back into the game. Cause how it's looking, EVERYone will eventually sell out: http://www.hiphopsite.com/NEWS/ Mos Def performing with Puffy??!

Also, Brendan, my S/N is always the same (BJGemini).

If you think Mos & Puff on an intro is bad, then I'm guessing you haven't seen the new video with Mos & Faith. Now that one really hurt. I guess alot of people in the industry are upset with Mos & Kweli for their current money-seeking ways.

Guess I should have specified more. Just about everything that was released until recently is a banger. But when you say "for a while now", I cna't really agree with that. Soundbombing 3 had some hot tracks on it and so did Hi-tek's release.

Soundboming 3 was the weakest in the series, part 2 still get regular play. Just another real hip hop head chiming in.........

I do have to agree. 3 is the worst of them, but still a good disc nonetheless. That Common-Sadat X track, 1999, off of 2 is rich! Damn, its good to see that all off you commenting on this (Sorgasm, BJGemini, Brendan, and straight six) really know your hip-hop. Everybody has their own opinions but, bottom line, lots of respect for the well-informed posts.

I agree with SB2 as a hip hop classic... I love dropping "Any Man" on my friends when they think they know all of Eminem's tracks. You guys remember when our standards were so high, that we would dislike songs just bc of one line? I am thirsting for one line nowadays....

And I am not sure about Mos Def anymore, but I am still loving Kweli. I can't wait for the next album. (Hopefully Nov.)

BTW, PrinzII gets "Most Musically Diverse" Award for 2002.

Takes the award with

Actually, I got exposed to a wide variety of music back in the day and that never left me. Couple that with me working with and even being a DJ (Hence the House Tracks on my list), my musical tastes expanded.

But in all honesty, I play music according to my mood at the time.

I forgot to mention Steely Dan for cruising. Tracks I am liable to use:

Pretzel Logic
Black Cow
When Josie Comes Home
Peg

For general commuting, I like bumping House or whatever my mood calls for at the time.
