17s or 18s.. + NYC... which do you pick?

I need new tires on my stock 16s.. since i want to get some nice, bigger wheels eventually either way.. i am just going to get some rims with tires instead.
however, as many times as this debate has been posted, there are always things that influence your decision on what size to go with, I can't decide...

Why 17s and NOT 18s:
-about 200-300$ a set cheaper than the same exact wheel with the same exact tire set would be in 18" size. That's 250-300$ more $ for a Y-pipe or other mods..
-More sustainable to NYCs atrocious streets where an 18" wheel would definately bend a lot quicker
-Lighter than 18s
-Tires wear slower
-Probably better for snow and all season driving since there is more tire, more sidewall, more flex and not as much roughenss and stiffness that makes pretty much any 18" wheel not suitable for rough weather.

Why 18s and not 17s
-It's only 1" but it makes a world of a difference in terms of looks
-might get the urge to get 18s later

Rota Battle:
19 lbs in 17 x 7.5":

VS.

ROH Adrenaline:
23 lbs in 17 X 7"

Looks like you have more pros for 17"s... and if you go with the ROH Adrenalines you should get 18", they won't look right in 17". But the Rotas will look great.

In your case, definitely dont get 18's, the 3000 miles a month you put on wont be fun at all. Stick with 17's, if you get the right kind, they will still look pretty big and you'll still get a decent comfort ride out of them.

I would go with 17 by 7.5 or 8 and keep at light as possible, especially if this is your daily driver.

i would go with the 17's since you commute to stony brook EVERY DAY (i know ,i know) ... plus i don't know how well 18's would hold up driving in nyc

Anything less than 18"s is too small for me. But I hate both of those wheels.

Those 18s definately won't hold up. I mean come on, you take the belt everyday. My stock 17s are already bent. My friend put the adrenalines on his old school benz, gets compliments, think he's selling them. 215 front and 235 rear.

damn,
you bent your 17s?

I doubt the Benz offset is the same as the Max, so they probably won't fit.. I'm going to get some 235 all around. 225s if the wheel is 7" wide..

I'm open for other wheel suggestions
I'd like something that is not that common on maximas, or at all.. that's why i picked those 2 wheels..
well,
that and they are cheap

if you go with 17's, get something that has a thin lip, it will look bigger than a thick lip wheel will.. im thinking about selling my wheels and getting some 18's next summer if i can come up with the extra cash.. the roads out here arent as bad as the city though lol

In NYC you fellas got new M3's like it's going out of style. I saw 4 of them in a 5-block radius last time I was up there around Washington Square. Yet those bad-boys cruise your streets on 18's or optional 19's.

18's being somehow bad on bad roads is like don't go swimming after you've eaten (here we go again!). It's a myth. The better tires have rim protectors and seriously, 1" more rim and less rubber isn't gonna kill you. Truth is 16-17-18 is a style thing, the Maxima isn't gonna turn into a Passat for handling with bigger rims. 18's look better, no question. 17's are long gone, it'd be like buying a Pentium II computer imho

Nyce,

What about those new Velox PG-10's that are coming out? Supposed to look alot like the VX-8's...I think them in 18x8 gunmetal/polished lip would look great on your car. Search ebay and email the seller about them, maybe you will love them!

I'm definatally voting on 18's. Their not going to bend unless you get a wimpy little cheap brand. If you HAVE to get 17's, get thin spoked with no lips. Eagle Alloys is a good example of this.

Good luck bro.

I would definately get those Velox's but most manufacturers take their sweet ****ing time with everything.. it's still not even certain if velox is even making such a wheel. I love the VX-8s.. it was a heartbreaker finding out they don't have them in 5 lug.. I want to spend under a 1000$ for rims and tires.. actually, my price range is even less, so that's why i'm thinking 17s.. but i need $ for other things like a drop and to getting my stillen kit painted.. i'm just wondering if like 300$ is worth not having wheels that look really nice on a 4th gen (18's) as opposed to "stock look" with 17s..

Well you have the SE 16" rims, right? In picture, they look extremely small, but in person they look great while the car is rolling and from certain angles. If I were you, I would get the stillen kit on, drop that b!tch, save up the rest of your $$, and by the time you could afford rims the PG-10's would probubly be out. And in my opinion, it's 18's or bust. Yes, performance will suffer, but your not gonna race your Maxima. It's a very quick 4 door, and with 18's you will still have the muscle to get around town, merge on the highway, and spank most people out there when you feel like it. So you can't spin your wheels as much of the line, so what? It's definatally worth the looks of 18's!! JMO.

thanks for kickin' flava in my ear

The 16s aren't too bad, just the Goodyear tires on them are ****. If i was to buy tires for these 16s, thats 450$ but i plan on getting some aftermarket wheels sooner or later, more likely sooner.. i wanted to just buy 17s or 18s and get tires for them rather than buying 16" tires now and then 17" or 18" ones later along with wheels.

Don't even consider 16"s. Actually, 17" wheels will look great on a 97. I just wouldn't put them on the bulkier looking 5th gen. For $1000, your options are extremely limited in an 18".

Personally, I won't ever buy anything again unless it has a machined lip. How about the Konig Rhythms in a 17? Those are hot! But they are $167.

whalentire.com has Konig Imagines in opal on sale for $149 in a 17". The opal Absolutes are $140 in a 17" as well.

Also, the RS limited Shinwa, Valkyrie, and Trama are all $105 right now, which is a SMOKIN deal.

Food for thought.....

Shinwa.......

For $105, I would get these. You can't beat these wheels for the price.

They are heavier than hell. Like $24 lbs each in an 18". And I scratched one yesterday while rotating my tires.

They were $240/each without tires, but Wheelmax has a package deal for $1500 that Rob Van Dam just got.

What are some lightweight rims that you would recommend, either 17 or 18? I like the SSR Integrals, but if you could give other suggestions.

Volks are light, but pricey. I'm not too keen on the wheel weight issue because I'm more concerned with appearance than performance.

Dude do not waste money on 17's. I live in Brooklyn and I just got 18's, they look and perform great. Take it easy with the potholes and you will be fine. I'm lowering the ride in a few weeks and after the winter I am getting 19's for the Max and maybe buying a vette and I plan to put 20's on that.

Life is short dude get the 18's.

Nice

I live in the Ditmas Park area right off of Coney Island Ave. The wheels are 23lbs w/o tires . But I am still burning rice left and right and the other day I even got the jump on a s500.

23 lbs without tires is actually pretty light for 18s, especially for chrome ones.

The potholes and bad roads aren't the only things that concern me,
like i said, i'd probably want to keep them on all year round, 18s and probably any kind of tire will not work in snow or very cold weather.. plus they'll wear out faster...
but they look so much better

Take your time and research, research, research.
If I did my homework right I would have just brought 19's to begin with. 19's is what I really wanted.

Good Luck and peace.

Here comes tha brand new flava in ya ear: 17x7 Caffeines @19.9lbs. each, 17x8 Caffeines @20.1lbs. each, or 18x7.5 @21.5lbs. each

I got my 17x8's for $650 at my local discount tire co. Caffeines are being discontinued so I suggest you hurry your azz up! 18" Caffeines could be had for around $790 locally if your quick.

I don't have Discounttire around here.. at least not that I know of..
I love the Caffenes, wouldn't mind having them at all, but i can't find them anywhere..
i should have jumped on the deal discounttire had like 2 years ago, 99$ per rim, 17"

unfortunately looks like i'll stick with 17s.. i still need the car to commute not to just floss around in.

look at whalentire.com. Did you like the second ones that I posted? For $105/wheel, I am in love with those.
