First the engine, then the transmission

Yeah lost the transmission tonight.

Second to third gear shift and that was it.

Car won't go into first or second gear at all now and was making horrible sounds when rolling.

Who's replaced a transmission, what do they go for at the junkyards, and what does Nissan charge for their rebuilt transmissions. I may go through insurance because I was in an accident very recently that involved physical damage to the transmission's external casing.

Can I buy that from Nissan? If this other company's insurance is repacing it then they will buy a remanufactured one from Nissan.

Yes and you'll also have to buy LSD driveshafts (stronger). I don't see a problem with this since this will be an OEM tranny. BTW, Don in Texas sells heavy duty drive shafts so you should hit him up.

Yes you can get that from the dealer. You already have the infiniti motor, you might as well get the LSD trans to match.

What year I30t transmission's have the LSD?

I assume these are easier to find the ES Maxima from Canada.

Anyone have a part number on the transmission I need, and is driveshafts the only other part i need?

The LSD trannys are REALLY hard to find. Your best bet if you really want an LSD tranny is to find a 95-99 I30T 5-speed trans. They ALL have LSDs.

You don't need both drive axles if I remember correctly. I think you just need the drivers side axle.

Nissan doesn't sell re-built transmissions for our car unfortunately.

Junkyard prices vary...just look around and find a good deal.

Then they sell new ones, if I go through insurance then that's what insurance will have to buy, insurance doesn't pay to rebuild things, it's a risk to them, it's gotta be done the right way.

If I pay for it, i will buy one from the junkyard. What's the price on these things typically? Also, I think it's the passenger side axle that needs to be changed.

New ones are like 4 grand....hahahahaha

You can probably get a trans from a junkyard for 600-700 bucks.

Maybe it is the passenger side axle....I didn't know so I just bought a quaife

I have had 2 transmissions go out on my Maxima. The first time I bought one from a junkyard. It ran $1600 dollars installed by Nissan. The second time I had that transmission rebuilt. I paid $1400 for the new bearings, differential gear etc. (replaced everything internally that was broken). If I had to do it all over again, I would go with a used tranny. My transmission is a bich to get into gears now. Like Eric said, I hate Nissans transmissions too! Good luck. Btw- welcome to the "I broke my tranny club."

We'll see, I keep hearing drastically varying numbers on the price of these junkyard trannies.

I know new ones aren't cheap, but that's how insurance does it. My friend just had to get a new one for his camaro z28 and they got him a new one.

Hi Brian, sorry to hear of your troubles.
A-1 Imports south of Bergstrom has two high mileage manual transmissions for $450 each. (You're still in Austin, right?) They will have to be rebuilt, but they are otherwise in good condition (all gears turn, etc.) They are both non-LSD even though the counter guy was "absolutely positive" over the phone that one of them was LSD. Beware of buying a used transmission sight unseen from junkyards. They will tell you anything to make a sale.

Due to the fact that there is external casing damage to the transmission, my insurance company is taking care of it. Since insurance comapnies just replace transmissions if they're externally damaged it's not a problem. Regardless of whether the cause was from too much power or from the external damage, the insurance company has to replace it just based on the fact that there is external damage. I guess it really couldn't have happened at a better time.

I also discovered I got a nice size dent in my oil pan.

To find out the mileage of the tranny, take the VIN on the tranny and run a carfax on it. If its a junkyard car it will show when the salvage title was issued. My tranny had 16,000 miles on it

Hey Brian
Been there done that. If you want to play you got to pay. My engine with 50k cost $900 and the LSD tranny was $800. You are lucky the insurance is coming in there.
They will take a lot of punishment but there is a limit. When you test it eventually you will find it.
I am not sure experience is worth the price but you do learn.

The dent is probably from when your new motor was sitting waiting to be installed...mine is dented too. It won't hurt anything unless it's leaking.

that's why you run a VIN check and find out how many miles were reported on the car when it was wrecked...

The oil pan came off my old engine, it isn't dented, and the dent is shapr and deep from the driveshaft, the shop thinks it may have gone 1/2" to 1" in a caused a slow leak, but they just got a look at it.

I don't think I punished my tranny too hard, I never did speed shifts or anything, it was always full clutch in, full clutch out, etc. I think somehow it got low on fluid.
