Lug Stud Tools - Yes or NO?

I went to Kragen today to pick up a lug stud bolt tool. Reason being one of my studs are stripped and need to be replaced. Needless to say they didn't have it and the guy said all you need to do is push the lug through and make sure it's straight, and then tighten the lug nut onto the stud and that will press the bolt through the hub.

I've used the bolt tool before to successfully replace stud bolts however i've never done it the way described by the kragen guy. It seems like it would work but I was wondering if it's a good idea. Will I hurt anything?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Lug Stud Tools - Yes or NO?

If that is like a press tool, that certainly would be the better way to do it. I hated having to bang the living schnitz out of the stud to get it out. Getting the new one in is no problem... just tighten the lug on the stud with a few washers on there.

To get my studs out I just tap them with a hammer. To get them back in I WOULD NOT try tightening a lug down on it. I've tried this before with disastrous results. I ended up stripping the splines off the stud, so it never gets secured into the hub. I just TAP them repeatedly with a hammer to get them in, straighten them with lateral taps, and then continue tapping them in until they are finished. Maybe the tightening a lugnut on the stud method works for some, but I'm 0 for 2 with that method and have to replace the studs because of it.

I just use a buncha washers and an open nut thats the right size (M12x1.25) and use alot of force to tighten down the stud. Ive done this many times and it has not stripped yet.

Thanks for the replies guys. Eric's method is very similar to what the stud tool is. A bunch of washers and an open nut that you tighten with a wrench.

Eric where did you get the open nut?
