Ran out of gas today :(

Well as the subject states I ran out of gas.

The gas light had just come on and I parked the car on a slight incline thinking I would gas up after class. Well when I got back I couldn't start it.

Is this normal?

Plus I spilled gas all over my brand new diesel jeans and shoes

This probably happened because the fuel pickup in your tank couldnt reach the gas that had had all shifted to the other side of the tank due to the slight incline...with my car sometimes when I park on an incline and I come back the needle is lower/higher due to which way the car is facing. Maybe what you should have was put it in neutral and put it on level ground and let the gas settle back out.

That's weird. When I was at the track a few weeks ago, my gas was very low. The gas went on as I headed out of the track on my way home. It's a 1 1/2 hour trip back home from the track. Anyway, I passed up a gas fillup place, but that place was kind of a rundown gas place, so I didn't want to fill it up there. I thought there had to be more gas stations not too far up ahead. I was wrong. I was very worried that I would run go of gas in the middle of no where. Luckily for me, there was just enough gas left until I reached the next gas station which was about 15 miles away. I was shocked that I could drive an extra 15 miles even though the gas light went on. It was very empty when I filled it up because it took about 16-17gals to fill it up.

Good point. I tested the low feul light once on a long highway drive. I drove for a while, it would go on and off, depending on the inclcine I'd be driving on. Then, on this long medium gradient hill, about 3/4 of the way up, when I lightly pressed the pedal, that car stuttered I quickly exited and filled up. I had pushed my car 45 miles while cruising steadily in 5th gear. WHen I filled up, I put in 17.1 gallons. I was 0.9 gallons away from completely empty.

I only did this once, though. I don't like to stress out the feul pump.

Discipline yourself to always fill up when you get to a 1/4 thats what I do. A tow truck or a long walk is time/money wasted. Sorry to hear that.

I usually fill up at a 1/4 tank but I have been too busy to fill it up. Now I have wasted more time.

Thats nothing I drove nearly 35 miles once the gas light came on and I didn't even run out Which was wierd since I was doing 95 mph at the time. The last 5 miles I was panicking though.

it's weird
but my car starts to run out of gas about 10-15 miles after the gas light comes on.....

after then, anything over 3k rpms and it starts to bog like crazy..

this is weird
my 98 auto could be driven well into the light...

perhaps i just have a lot of dirt and crap at the bottom of my gas tank.

I never let my gas get lower then 1/4 tank. That helps keep moisture out and the fill ups are cheaper too!

I always let the tank get down to empty, it's faster down there.

I find that the gas light turns on at different times for me whether I am on the freeway or city. When it just comes on while I am doing 75 on the highway, I have 2 gallons left. If it comes on in the city, I have 3 gallons left. Oh, and the Maxima's capacity is 18.5 gallons for those of you who think its a 16 gallon tank.

i've gone to 17.8 gallons before. at that point it doesn't even sputter, it just dies... and at the worst times, too.
