psssst, can this be done?

Has anyone heard of or tried to put a v-8 in a max?
I'm curious to know if there is a tranny that would work for this.
I relize that is only one of the many issues that would have to be addressed, but I thought to seek some feed back from everyone out there as to thier opinions and/or experience in this area.

With minor modification to your shoulder, it is possible.

With enough work you can make a V-8 work...but why not sell your maxipad and get a sports car? It would probably be cheaper.

Been there, done that. No pics due to legal issues w/ the new shop that will be marketing this for the maxima community.

Why in the world would you ever want to do that? Use your money for something else.

Ive got a small block chevy sitting in my garage waiting for me to put it into my 72 Z. ive got all the tools id ever need to make an engine cradle for a 350 to mount to the maximas framerails. ive actually taken measurements... with a short stack water pump and the stock rad fans it would fit. if you replaced the rad fans with ones that mount in front (ac condensor removal required) youd have 10 12 inches to play with from the front of the block to the rad.... The lack of transmission tunnel and fuel tank are the tough parts. youd have to cut the floors and weld in a wider tunnel to accomodate the transmission thus giving up your factory center console and maybe even your lower dash. (two things i wouldnt miss much) the driveshaft would have to be custom made. then comes the rear suspension. its already a solide axle and theres LOADS of room back there for a 4 link solid axle or even a C4 corvette rear end (saw 3 of them at a swapmeet ranging from 600- 800 bucks) with driveshafts rear end control arms and all that crap. all alluminum. as far as the fuel tank unless you drop the tank cut a channel in it and reweld it youll never clear a drive shaft. other options are dual fuel cells mounted on either side but that would require filling them underneath the back seat (tilt seat anyone?) once the factory rear suspension is gone there would be just enough room if you cut out the spare tire well to mount dual porsche mufflers just like they used on the new Z in sport compact car to run dual exhaust. as far as front suspension goes. the stock equipment is decent. for cost effectivness youd need to pull apart the stock CVs and use just the axleshaft part with the splines on it for the wheel bearing. or if you really wanted to get into it a tubular control arm front end would only be about 700 bucks fully adjustable with coilovers but figuring out the valving and spring rates can be a biznatch. the last thing i can think of is steering rack and emmissions. Steering rack is simple. brackets off the motor subframe should work. might have to use a mustang rack and pinion from summit geared for no power steering. As far as emmissions if your doing all this work you might as well go with programmable efi or an LS1 out of a camaro or a vette which if tuned correctly will have no problem passing emmissions. unless i come into some serious dough to buy another car im not even going to ponder this any further ive already got one overbuilt car i dont need two. if i left anything out im sorry but its late and im tired - pete

There was a 350 dropped into a 300zx as well. It was putting down 900 HP on the bottle

i was going to do that but i figured why not go for gobs more power and torque and the most modified motor in the history of the world. id wager u can go into any shop anywehre in the country and get parts for a small block chevy. motor mounts and tranny mounts are like 200 bucks and thats only if i decide not to make them myself (really simple design) SudZ if yer really interested in building a Z i know where theres a prime specimen for 1000 bucks. its # 00095 and in pretty good condition compared to some of the ones i seen. anyways im blabbering. look through ebay and the papers. someday should turn into monday of next week and monday of next week will be the first day of the rest of your life -pete

GM is just wrapping up the design of a new narrow angle V8. It's as long as a I4, and as wide as a V6. IIRC power levels are up above 350 hp. I bet that would fit nicely.

LOL

Saab motors sit F-R and they are front wheel drive...just get a V8 that bolts to the Saab tranny and voila! Or you could just buy a J30 and do a VQ30DETT/5-spd swap....

Two Aggies (Texans will know what I mean) were sitting in the hunting lodge next to a nice, warm fire, hound dog lying on the rug in front of the fire. The dog starts to lick his nuts and one Aggie says to the other, "wish I could do that". The other Aggies says, yeah, that'd be great, wouldn't it? I'd try it but I'm afraid he'd bite me."

Yuk-yuk-yuk.
