Weighed my new ASA LS5s with Sumitomo HTR+ and stock 15" saw blades

After reading the packing slips from Fed-Ex concerning my 17" ASA LS5s with Sumitomo HTR+, I became a bit confused. Fed-Ex listed the shipping weight as 49lbs for three of the rim/tires and 54lbs to the fourth (lugs in this package). I knew the LS5s weighed 17.5lbs, there was probably 2lbs of paking material and then the rest was the Sumitomos? I was under the impression that the HTR+s were pretty light. Anyways, I grabbed a scale we use at work for USPS/Fed-Ex shipping and took it home. The scale is accurate to within 0.1 lbs and goes up to 60lbs.

new 17" ASA LS5 with 235/45 Sumitomo HTR = 41.1 lbs
LS5 = 17.5 lbs
HTR+ = 23.6 lbs <-----very light for a 235/45R17

15" OEM saw blade with NEW 215/60 Sumitomo HTR 200 = 42.3 lbs
15" saw blade = ~19 lbs
HTR 200 = 23.3 lbs

SO, like I've always thought, Fed-Ex typically adds ~15-20% to the actual weight of the item so that they do not overload their trucks and planes.

the HTR+ are that light? that's good, I just got those a few weeks ago. I love mine, stick like nothing I've had before. How do you like yours? I guess thats why I can still spin the tires even though they're much stickier than the old stock toyos...

I did the same thing but with my 18s and there were a surprisingly low 42lbs. My stocks were 50lbs just for an idea.

Dave,
I'm planning on getting the same rims from tirerack but with different tires. How is the finish on the rims. Is it painted or highly polished?

That is a light weight tire for that size. If you read my relpy in the 1/4 forum, my 235/25 R17 950's are 29lbs. Are you at all worried about the durability of the tires, because that is pretty light? I had read that the side wall strength on lighter tires is compromised.

Yeah, but the 15s will still accelerate faster because of less rotational inertia and tire drag

They're painted bright (really bright, looks polished) satin silver. The finish is the best I've seen on an aftermarket wheel, especially a wheel that sells for $155 in a lightweight 17.

Generally 235/45 tires weigh anywhere from 24-28lbs. 23.6lbs is light for a 235/45, especially an A/S WR rated tire. As for reliability, I've never had problems with Sumitomos in the past. Sumitomo incorporates a special stell belt technology that's suppose to make their high performance tires lighter and quieter. I'm sure that have something with the light weight. I don't know about the sidewall strength and thickness of hte HTR+ because they came already mounted on the 17s. I did look at the sidewalls of my 225/50R16 HTRZs and 215/60R15 HTR 200s before they were mounted and the sidewalls appeared to be beefy.

People always talk about wheel weight but usually neglect tire weight. Tire weight is many times more critical than wheel weight because the tire is even further from the rotation point. My 235-40 T1-S are 20lbs, lightest Max performance tire on the market
