My new 4th gen 5spd vs. My Old 5th Gen auto?

I'm on my way to Houston to pick up my new 97 GXE 5-Spd . My wife has taken over the 2K1 SE auto. Should I let her keep talking smack or can I put her in her place? I'm thinking that the two cars will be pretty closely matched. The 2K1 has a WAI only, and the 97 will be stock. What do y'all think?

I think the 97 would take it, what is it, about 27 hp more in the 2k1? The weight and the auto would most likely eat up the hp and then some. The GXE would top out at 112 but I hope you're not gonna take it up that high with your wife.

Well, let's see here...4th Gen GXE 5spd 0-60 stock is 6.5-6.6...a 2k1 Auto is 7.8. That intake probubly shaves .1-.2 off her 0-60.

Basically, if you don't destroy her, especially off the line, then you can't shift worth a damn.

wow i didnt know basically stock for stock the 4th was that much better. oh but then again it would be a debate of stick vs auto.

i ran a 2k-2k1 (pretty sure auto) se the other day. i chirped 2nd in my stupid heavy oem 17's. and...by end of 3rd wouldve banked him pretty good.
but it sure is fun to go against a newer model

What the heak are you talkin about? Auto's are dogs off the lines, especially 2k-2k1's. (no offense fella's ) Have you seen SteVTECs dyno comparisons? The 4th gen's HP/TQ to weight ratio is better for low end grunt then the 5th gens...but the fact that it's a stick vs. auto should say enough.

If you launch right and don't spin the hell outta your tires (which is very easy to do) you will run away from her.

I'd also like to point out that the 5spd's first gear is alot better then the auto's...the 5spds is 3.33, whereas the auto's is like 2.43? Anyways, I converted my auto to 5spd and it's like night and day. The 5spd's first gear is soo much more powerfull then the auto's...the only trade-off is it winds out quicker.

yea so tru, i hate my first gear, although it makes my car go crazy, u can't stay on it long at all and nothings worst than being at high rpm on first gear and letting go of the clutch

dam face will be on the glass if u don't hold on tight

those 0-60 times seem a little fast. so a 4th gen stick can be bumper to bumper almost with a 2k2 auto?

Its a drivers race. Would be close, with a slight edge to the 2k2 auto.

Kids, we are talking about a 2001 Maxima. And 2k2 auto's can run mid 6's, I don't know why all the mag's got 6.6 for the Maxima 4th gen and like 7 for the 2k2 auto. But it has more potential then that.

all 5spd do in first gear is spin, they don't go anywhere

the 4th gen 5spd will easily put many cars (6+?) on a 5th gen auto on the highway, do you remember how slow your old auto is from a 70mph roll starting at high 3000rpm in third gear? any 5speed maxima will kill autos around that speed.

no 5spd maxima is going to put 6+ carlength on me from 0-60

4th Gen wins hands down!

I raced my friend who was driving a 2k3 auto SE and I beat him 3 out of 4 times and that's only because I f*cked up my launch on the 1st run. Also I have the video to prove it. BTW I only have a drop in K&N filter.

As a max owner, I can't believe you even asked this question. 4th gen 5spd > all autotragic short of 2k2.

Thanks for the comment guys. I knew I could spawn some interesting comments. By the way, at the airport tonight, it was in fact the 97 5spd who shined. Maybe it's b/c the 2K1 auto was dirty. I think all that TX dust weighs a ton!

As for the GXE , it's only b/c of the limiter. Got to get that fixed.

Thanks guys. And Have a Merry Christmas.

Yes it will be, especially with a stock pulley ...I just will make sure I get a solid headstart and a good prayer in before he takes off.

I'm about to have this exact same dilemna, though I have quite a few more mods on the 2k. I would agree that off the line the 5spd is going to get a major jump, though I wouldn't expect it to go screaming away. From a roll, I think it would depend where you started at. As long as the 2k downshifted to 2nd (<65mph), I think it'd stand a fair chance, though that's just been my experience. Maybe the only 2 5spds I've run really didn't know what the hell they were doing. Before anyone chimes in telling me no way and that I'm an idiot, remember I have every decent bolt-on available for the 2k's. My best time with just the JWT intake and y-pipe was 15.25, which isn't that far off from a 4g 5spd.

Keep in mind though, I think the 4g 5spd is going to have a hell of a lot more potential, hence the reason I've picked that year and model and plan on making it my play car.

Yeah, but you have mods, meaning it's going to be a different story.

Actually, I've never seen that video, just heard about it. I wouldn't mind having a peek.

Ahhh, I have seen those before. Hard to forget Hogan's mouth...

I'm not denying the 4g 5spd can be much, much faster, I was just referring to a fully modded 2k vs. stock 4g, starting at a decent speed for the auto tranny, but then again it's pretty sad when I have to come up with so many conditions. It's still not going to be a total blowout though.
