How does a silencer work?

How does the intake silencer work? My cone is loud as *****. Im wondering what that box thats in the OE intake does that hushes the engine so much.

It's more than just that box. There are several tubes and boxes that are specially shaped and sized to resonate and cancel out hte intake noise.
