2003 vs 2004 (Decision)
My dad is interested in getting a 2003 Maxima, but he was unaware of the new styling and changes for the 2004. I hoever don't know that much, but have been reading up on the 6th Gen but am like many not a big fan of the styling so far (may grow on me). As of now what does everyone think? When is the offical release date...Detroit Auto Show?

2k3 6-spd!!!
My father (age 52) bought a 2k3 6-spd several months ago and he loves it. Nissan will be offering DEEP discounts and great financing on the 2k3 Maxima with 2k4 coming out. Irregardless of manufacturer, I would never buy a first year model vehicle. There are always bugs to work out and little tweeks to be made.

I think waiting is the way to go. From what we know, the 2004 is ugly, but we'll have to see it to be certain. The 2003 is ugly--it looks so bad when it's on the Nissan lot next to the newer cars like the Alty, Murano, Z. The Sentra does not look too good but it's not ugly. Unfortunately the Max is. If there's a $1000 discount now one can only imagine what it'll be by spring. With the 4th gen it peaked at $2500. You buy now with a $1000 rebate, whatever it is in the spring is pure depreciation loss, so is it worth another $1500 to get it now (perhaps 500/mo)? Those 2k3's ain't going anywhere!

for the amount of money that your dad is going to blow, i'd go for a G35 or an acura TLS....... nissans service really sucks.....if you go for the "premium brands" you'll get temporary cars everytime you have your vehicle serviced - its great!

a little advice f rom the guy that likes RICE!
FINANCIAL ADVICE:
if your Father wants to keep this purchase for a long time (10 years) he will be better off financially going with the discounts offered right now --> (buy a 2003)
if he trades his car in often (every 2-4 years) he will be better off buying the car that will most likely have a better resale value. --> (buy the 2004)
PERFORMANCE/SAFETY:
your dad won't notice the difference in the engine modifications they'll do to the 2004...because they aren't planning to do much to it, maybe get 20 more horsepower at the most...(rumurs say 275 tops) and I doubt your dad will even use all 255hp availiable in the 2003. Even if it gets 20HP boost, it will probably weigh more, this would keep him from noticing anything...but I've been wrong before, (once or twice)...
Something he will notice is the rumured AWD system, that would provide for a much safer ride.
Also, the 2004 Maxima WILL have an independent rear suspension--not a rumur---fact, just like the Altima, which will allow the car to keep control better when in turns on a bumpy surface...
Performance (errr...handling) and safety (via the new AWD & Independant Rear Suspension) should be BETTER with the 2004 Model.
STYLE:
that's up to your dad...
While the 2004 will probably grow on us...that is totally opinion, performance data and safety is more fact based information.
But fresh is fresh...even if it doesn't fair well, it's that new look of a new model...that may be better for him....
I just bought a 2k3 Maxima 6 speed in September, I had no idea the 2004s were going to be out in January...I figured they'd be out in June or something...
but I am happy with my car...almost...I really wish I'd have bought a BMW...but that's another story....
Weigh everything as it pertains to you! (uhh, I mean, your Dad), and good luck with the purchase.

get an infiniti
yeah, nevermind all that crap I just wrote, get an Infiniti...but I bet your dad would be better off with an I35...FWD is better for old-farts, because they really don't care about performance like us punk kids...and I'm sure he can get a good deal on a 2k3 I35...much better than a G35 (getting a deal)
you still get the great service, and the I35 is a little bit bigger, and probably THOUSANDS cheaper...the dealers are practically giving them away...

Thanks for all the input. I'm going to try to get my dad to look into some of the infiniti's and wait it out for a little while. Does anyone know when the new Acura TL's are supposed to be out, he used to like those cars as well. Maybe I could talk him into going for a new S4 or something like that.
