I think the whole car tax is BS. You pay for the car with the money you get after you pay your income taxes and they tax you again on the car. It's crazy.
My car tax is like 400 bucks every year.
bastards...
If we pay that much taxes, at least everybody should get health insurance, like the rest of the world.
Ever read a bed time story where this bad, old, mean emperor taxes his people to death?
that's how I feel.

heh, you know you only pay $400 a year... do yuo know what they pay in Europe to own a car? How about paying for taxes based on the weight or the size of the engine? $400 is nothing compared to what happens there.

Ever heard of 'Taxation Without Representation' -->

Well, that's what the car tax is.....

You're right, you have already paid federal and state income taxes when you buy the car. Then, you pay state and local taxes on the purchase of the car. Then, every year you 'renew' your registration, you pay taxes on what the car is worth. That is [2 plus the number of years you register your vehicle with the state] times that your vehicle is taxed.

Here in TN, this vehicle tax is not used. However, when you sell your used car, the new owner is taxed for the amount of the sale.....

You'd be amazed at how many $500 Maximas, etc. that are sold in this state.

In the coming years, this country's next revolution will involve our overtaxation......

Plus, if I hear one more person say we should stop *****ing about this confiscation of our own money by a bloated government I'm going to scream.....

Shing, no offense, but I don't give a rat's rear end what socialists in Europe pay in car taxes....that's their problem. This country was founded in part because of the back asswards taxation principles used in those countries, as well as freedom from religious persecution. $400 is still $400 MORE than the government needs to do ANYTHING.

Same goes with gasoline. If I want to pay $5 and $6/gallon for gas, I'll move to Europe. They can ***** and moan all they want about how we ONLY pay $1.50 to $2 for a gallon of gas, but they could change that if they really WANTED to.

Slowly but surely, we are repeating the same historical mistakes made by other countries that giving power to the few who THINK they know everything and telling everyone ELSE how to run their lives (which is what the tax structure really is) is somehow better than giving everyone the freedom to be the best, or worst, they can be on their own.

This 'vehicle tax' is just a microcosm of our whole tax structure.

OK, enough venting...

$400 on a car with a $20,000 FMV?? Are you sure that's all property taxes? That's like 2%!

Just deduct that on your Sch. A (if you itemize) next time you file your T/R.

We have to pay ad_valorem tax (fancy name for prop. tax) every year when we renew the registration. I believe most of the states require that as well. But 2%, hell no!

For those Californians here, do you recall the time when an assessor goes to your house and counts every single piece of new items you purchased during the year?

None taken...

I was just pointing out there are worse out there. I guess I've always been told that to some extend, don't just look at one side of the coin.

Sure the gov't wastes money etc... but you know there's no perfect system and the one we have is about 200% better than what's out there.

The beauty of this country is, if you don't like the $400 a year on the vehical tax, there's always another state that doesn't have it. Take texas for example, no state income tax, and no vehical/road tax. This is one reason why I don't look forward tomoving to a place like Californation or the east coast.

In oklahoma, we used to pay out the @$$ to renew our car tags every year.. now it's about $60/year on my max, and the parent's lexus it's about $250.. it used to be closer to $7-800, until some laws were passed back in August.

In Missouri, the car is taxed along with your house as property tax, and tags are cheap.

I know there's no perfect system but this post just ticked me off....set off a hot button....

You're right, that is the beauty of this country: FREEDOM to go whereever and do what you want. Unfortunately, we're paying people to sit on their *** all day and call it 'compassion'. It's a dark and slippery path we're on, I just hope a new administration creates the impetus for hope and inspires all of us to get out of the mire that we're in morally and economically....

TN, just like TX, has no state income tax [yet] and no vehicle tax as well......but, having visited there and all, TN and TX are my two favorite states.....the gun reciprocity agreement is sweet as well....Should the income tax pass here, TX will be high on my list of places to move and get another job....

Come on down... I'll buy the first pitcher.

You know Texas is truely a very unique place. Don't like the hot humid summer? Move to Austin... don't like hot dry(er) weather, move to Dallas... don't like Hot period? Move to Amarillo. Want snow in the winter? Pan handle will give that to you. You just crave the 100% humidity all year round? Houston is it. But you know the best city in texas has to be Austin... man, I miss that place.

Shing! Man when you talk about Texas, I just want to move there. No income Tax, no vehicle tax. Sounds good to me. I was there last April and liked that place a lot. What I like about it is that it's "roomy". Overhere in Mass., it crowded as hell in my opinion however. I can't wait til March because I'm there again but my trip is a short one.

Yeah, I'm partial to Austin as well....

A good 'tweener' city that is in the center distance-wise from the others....

Hmmm....I wonder if anyone in TX is looking for an embedded systems engineer specializing in Motorola processors......

Nevermind, stupid question. More like 'Let the bidding begin!'

*nod*

you know... Motorola is in Austin, Samsung's new plant, IBM, Dell... yup, let the biddig begin. For me, if I am willing to go consulting, that's when the bidding begins. There's a consulting firm that's offering upto 50% bouns each year based on billable hours. But alas, I don't feel like flying all over.

Re: Ever heard of 'Taxation Without Representation' -->

I was just wondering if you knew what the term "taxation without representation" means because that's not what that is...You may not like the tax, or think it's proper...But that isn't "without representation" they still let you vote in VA don't they? And you vote in the governor, state house of delegates, county council, ect...who make those laws. "without represenation" would be if you had no say in the issue...you have a say along with the rest of the state/country, just doesn't seem your talking tot he right people/they want to hear what you're saying
