Valve Timing Springs

Valve Timing Springs
I am about to purchase an '97 or '98 maxima, but a nissan specialists says there is a problem with the vavle timing springs from '93-'98. I read the article about the ticking sound and the money to replace the springs, but it only mentioned years '92-'94. Would someone please help me with what years this occurs on most frequent, and what year did nissan fix this problem, since this might be a reason to go with honda. thanks,
Cris

Re: Valve Timing Springs
There is no known problem with the 95-99 Maximas. The problem is with the 92-94 SE's, which have problematic cam/valve timing sprockets. These are automatically adjusting ones unlike the 95-99's, and are known to begin failing by ~60K miles. The symptom is a severe ticking noise during startup.
A 97 or 98 Maxima would not have this problem, and in fact is one of the most reliable vehicles you could purchase, bar none. Make sure the previous owners took care of it properly (oil changes, tuneups, etc), and if it all looks good, you have little to fear of major future issues.
