VIDEO: dyno strap snaps!!
VIDEO: dyno strap snaps!!
so, I was on fbody forum and came across a video from their dyno meet, about a import breaking the strap on a dyno. watched it, and funny - it looked VERY familiar, almost like I was the one driving it - oh wait, I AM.. just found it, would have rather not seen this haha, but here it is
note the camera man (random f-body guy, i dont know him) ducks the camera and runs lol
dyno strap snaps if it is only 7seconds and no action, right click and save as... its longer!
its bad quality, but what can you do - i didnt have anything to do with the filming or hosting, so dont talk to me.

This is SOOOO strange... I had just done a search over at www.contour.org and I was reading your thread about the snapped strap over there, then I come back here and read this.... how weird.
Anyways, whats the link to the forum they were talking about this on. I'm interested to see what they had to say.

YOu can see that the car is swaying back and forth for a couple seconds before it happens, thats one scary video. The sound is the worse part about the whole video actually, and the guy running for his life..
Scary video.
My question is why in the world did this incompetent shop hook the scraps to the central portion of the car? The straps should be at the far four corners of the car and the straps should CROSS each other so that IF a strap breaks, the car will not move like yours did. These guys are idiots and really could have hurt some people and maybe even your car.

dam taht's sick. I remember seeing this video a few months back. Dam, isn't there like a maximum amount of hp those straps can take? or a certain speed before they give way? you went about 20 seconds at full throttle with 300+ hp on a very light car. First off, i doubt you have EVER driven 20 seconds straight at full throttle in that car, better yet, u probably never driven 15 and with 300+ hp and a nice light car like a maxima, 5 seconds is a big distance not to mention a big difference in mph. You should check and see what was the maximum those bands could take cause u probably went like 200 mph or soemthing

and horsepower on that dyno is max of 1200, so I doubt sheer power snapped them. I think somehow they got melted although we cant find any way, that or they were just old and it was their time in life.
shortly after this incident the shop sold their dyno. I doubt if it is related in any way , but still haha

I think Dave B is right... it wasn't strapped down right, so heat from somewhere under the car started working on the straps...

For those that are nervous about dynoing, as long as the car is strapped down right, this type of thing won't happen. Make sure the shop you go to places the straps at the four outside corners of the car. Then they should cross the straps front and back to make an X-pattern. From there they should slowly torque the straps down in a criss-cross pattern. Make sure the straps are out of the way of hot metals.

I swear it looks like they put the straps on the engine cradle. Is there a middle tow hook, I can't remember. Either way, it's quite possible there was a slight leak at the turbo or the Y-pipe got really hot and ended up fatiguing the strap.

I will definetly keep this in mind when I have my first dyno session.
