Trying to decide between 01 and 02 Max

I will be looking for a low mileage- used Max within the next year. I have done the research and know the specification differences. My question is about level of quality. Is there a difference between the quality of the 01 and 02 models?

I ask because with the new chairman of Nissan (Gohn- sic) making statements about not painting unexposed sheet metal to save cost and other somewhat disturbing statements, I wonder if there is a difference.

I tried to search but the term "quality" brought up a lot of random issues but I couldn't find conclusive info. If there are better terms to use in the search function, I will be happy to do the leg work.

Thanks in advance.

I recommend getting the 2K2 because of power. You can add boost to the 2K1, but it's a hassle unless you're really into tuning or have a connection for the installs. I speak from experience; supercharging my 2K has been more of a mess than fun. If I had to do it all again, I'd do the same thing, though. I learned a bit about cars, but spent a lot of money and time.

If you can afford it, why not look at the Subaru WRX STi? It's a 4-door family sedan, but has an estimated 300HP, AWD, racing seats, sporty suspension, and a big wing. It costs a little more, but you get more performance too. It's tunable too, if you're looking for that.

If you have time to search

try and find a 2k1 AE, that is one sweet, low production ride.

Thanks for all the responses. It seems this community is mixed too.

Can you guys make some suggestions on terms to use for the search feature so I can look for the common problems?

Since I drive a Ford right now, what may seem like major problems to some are simply non-issues to me

Are there any quality differences in the tranmissions or engines? Reliability issues?

Thanks for all the responses.

do a search in hte 5th Gen Forum for MAFS or disabled or dealership and you will get your 2k2 answers

i would buy the 2k2 and buy about 3 Mass Air Flow Sensors to keep in hte car.. thats if you don't mind driving under 2500 rpms till you get home

I think you should re-evaluate your finances and save up a little more for the Subaru WRX STi. You have until this summer, so you can save some for the down payment.

Why are you buying a Maxima? What qualities have drawn you towards a possible purchase? Answering these questions may help us help you make a decission.

Some of the differences between the 2K1 and the 2K2 are subtle (but not to .org members) and some are obvious. The 2K2 obviously has more power. However, the 6 speed tranny(2K2) has had more trouble than the 5 speed (2K1). The body of the 2K2 is more aggressive than the 2K1. I like the grille and sides better than than the 2K1. The gauges are slightly different. The tails are different, but they could be changed. Finally, one of the best features of the 2K2's is the headlights. Those HID's are great, but they do have a tendency to be stolen. Like the tails, the HID's can be put on a 2K1.
The biggest diffence is really the power. Even with NA mods, you cannot make a 2K1 as fast as a 2K2, but it will be close.

I have a 2K and I love it. I hope this helps.

Good luck,

T

That's a good question T-Bone.

I want a four door.
I want a 6 cylinder.
I want a manual.
I want a quasi-luxury sedan.
I want a car that responds to basic bolt-on mods (Intake, exhaust, etc).

As for the STI...

What is the official release date for that car next year? Oh yeah, that's right- no one knows. Subaru has been promoting the rumored release of that car for two years now.

And for the "who knows what price they are going to want for that car," plus deposit and dealer markup for the 3000 total units likely to hit showrooms...

No thanks.

I can get a loaded 02 SE 6 speed with less than 20K miles at wholesale auction and the balance of the warranty for $18K.

Good things come to those who wait. What's wrong with what you've got now? Make it last until the summer, then the STi will appear and you will be happy you waited! Trust me, as a Maxima owner, it's worth the wait.

I hear ya Tanman...

I will be buying a house within the next 12 months too so I have to spread the wealth

If my plan works out, I will have a 02 SE and a sub $200/ month car note...

Is that your car on the web site in your profile?

If so, I'm assuming by the BOV that you managed a turbo- nice work...

Supercharger! Go back and edit your post, I don't have a turbo, I have a supercharger. Hurry before the boo-birds attack you for your lack of knowledge! We have swarms of them here.

Seriously though, several of us have SCs with BOVs. That's my car (the black Maxima) on the webpage. I've lowered it since then, but no new pics.

House and new car? Good job, dude. I'm getting an apartment so I can afford a nicer car, like the STi .

SC not turbo...

Edit? They can kiss my ****...

Seriously, nice work. I have a lot of resepct for people who can accomplish what, seemingly, eveyone says you can't do.

Nice job.

Do have a write up on the process? Did you have to lower the compression ratio?

I'm getting an apartment so I can afford a nicer car, like the STi .

I think that he wants you to buy an STi Well if you have settled on the Maxima, I would say either the 2K1 or the 2k2 would meet your desires. Of course, the power of the 2K2 is appealing.

Are you doubting the power of the STi?? Go search for my thread about why the STi is a better car than a Maxima or a Neon SRT-4. I could care less what car he buys, I'm just giving input .
