You should check the gaskets first and make certain they are tight...then consider the Allied brand 22" resonator...it wirked well fo rme...but I have the y-pipe so I think it is still a bit harsh sometimes

The lack of a resonator in the mid-pipe will absolutely make a harsh raspy sound -- its a direct cause and effect. Aftermarket Y-pipe contribute to this.

The Cattman Cattback Exhaust is the only complete performance exhaust system for the Maxima that is specifically designed to overcome this problem, with or without a performance Y-pipe.

y-pipe, b-pipe, resonator, catback, hi-flow exhaust

i have the whole deal. it is loud on acceleration, and it sort of rumbles along at lower db levels while cruising. i actually like it. yes, it can be 'harsh.' but there is no rasp.
