After dynoing my car, I've figured out the best shift points for my car is about 6100rpms for the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. Last time at the track I was shifting way too late 6500rpms. After adjusting my shift points, it looks as if I'll be wanting to shift to 4th a ways before the beams. I haven't been to the track since September (not open until Feb), but I can remember being at about 6500rpms in 3rd as I'm passing the final timing box.

What should I do? Should I hold off or should I grab 4th as soon as my shiftlight goes off at 6000rpms?

Dave

well....the only time i ever ran, i short shifted 2-3 and 3-4 (because of data provided by Andi many moons ago) and ended up with a slower time.
I can't recall which runs i short shifted or which ones i took to redline because the launch may have caused the slower times, not the shifting.
personally, i say just run it out in 3rd. isn't it like the last 1 or 2 sec that you would have to shift anyway?

I cant comment on a 4th gen, but on my car, Im in 3rd through the traps at about 6400 rpm...just nipping at the limiter. Of course, the power curves for a 5g are much different and being so close to the limiter is actually beneficial.

The only true way you are going to be able to answer your question is by actually trying it at the track. Ill take a guess and say youll be slower to shift into 4th. Just the time it takes to change gears will be a minimum of 0.25 sec (if you are FAST). During this 0.25 sec period, you are applying no power..basically coasting. I doubt the added torque of shifting to 4th will make up for this.

Give it a try next time out.....Sorry you have to wait till Spring! If you were down here, we'd go tonight hehehehehehehehehe
