Quaife install gone wrong:( , shifter is hard and wont go into gear

Last night I lifted the tranny up the car with the help of three other guys. I put on about 7 bolts and quickly hook up the shifter assembly and see if I can at least put it in gear. The shifter I can move it but it is stiff and it wont go into gear. I can move it but is hard as pi ssss. Tonight I will connect the clutch cylinder to the fork and press on the clutch and see if that works or at least go into all the gears. If that dont work off comes the tranny and figure out how can I get that click clik noise back.

If you guys have any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated, dont post BSh it like take it to the mechanic because the car is completely disassembled and I am not about to put it together etc..
if not Ill keep you guys posted time to read that FSM one last time and see if I did anything wrong , but I never removed any of the gears and took Brians short cut which has me clueless as what the heck is going on.

I did I added new Redline oil in there and cleaned out the Throw out bearing and put new clean grease. If this fails tonight then I have to drop it whether I want to or not break it open and clean all the permagrey I put on there two times . One of my fingers is cut pretty bad and is stinging and boy am I sore felt like I worked out every part of my body since when I do an install I like to complete most of it in a timely manner. This is the only mod that has kicked my rear aside from the alignment problem I had last February.

When you put the case back together, did you make sure you put the 2 little ball bearings and the springs in?

Yes yes that was the last thing I put in the two check bearins and the little spring right behind it and then the little short bolt. I am really really stressed out its hard work dropping that thing, but if Eric you can drop your tranny numerous times so can I and thats the attitude I have. Is the fact that I put alot of effort and time into this for all to fall apart is whats killing me and thent to try to figure out why doesnt it want to go into gear.

When I was doing my install I couldn't get the shift forks/strike lever to line up, I had to take the damn case apart to do it like 5 times, eventually I got it. Good luck Jay, something tells me that tranny will have to come apart again.

I guess this will be the 2nd round I cracked it open since I could not line up what piece that you bolt out from the out side. Lucky I looked at the FSM and caught it and the perma grey was not dry. But this time is dry and is going to be a P I T A to crack it open. Also Eric you said something about the clicking noise I, I dont have no clicking noise so there goes mess up number one.

Thats odd, especially if you didnt touch any of the gear stuff. Hmmm. Is this with or without gear oil? Hmm that shouldnt matter either cause i was able to shift my transmission OK even when it was completely dry out of the parts washer. I'm also in the process of putting my transmission back in the car. What a pain in the *****. I have no motivation to do it at all since I got a new car.

I did put oil in there and still can not get it into gear nor do I hear the clicking noise you described in your other posts. Ill get back to everyone tonight or later on during this week and see if I can sort out all this issue. Now I see what you were going thru and the reason for a vette. I dont blame you in any way. I appreciate everyone posting.

What did you remove inside the tranny? Did you have any left over parts? When I took mine apart I had I ball bearing left. It was for engaging the revesre gear. If I would not of installed it my transmision would of been stuck in the reverse gear.

The only help I can give is this.....call Steve Hildbrand(his DAYTIME ONLY number is (520)400-7766) and ask for his help/advice.

He installed Brian Catts(Cattman) and another members' Quaifes.

I have no idea if he may be willing to help out, I just know he knows what it takes. He doesn't know me personally either, I've just talked to him about prices.

Good luck!

My guess is the same as Eric's. You probably dropped a detent bearing (the one with the spring and screw), it's happened to me before. I had the tranny all put back together, put it back in the car, put everything back together, tried to shift...nothing. So I'm guessing that's your problem.

Good news everyone I am back on track again:)

IceY2k1 thanks alot for the help and everyone that posted their help and input. I just got done dropping and cleaning the tranny. Here was the problem took me 2 minutes to figure it out. First gear was engaged and thats why the shifter was so hard and it was stuck. Took me 25 mins to remove all the bolts etc.. and 3mins to open it and my brother was assisting me and he pulled on those silver brackets and it broke loose. The FSM in the installation states to have the tranny between 1st and 2nd gear and thats where I left it at. I did take pics and Ill try to do a write up on it. Thanks to Mardigrasmax and Delio for encouraging me to play with it prior to installation I have this pretty packed down now. The sucky part was that it took me over an hour to reclean all the permagrey from the transmission. I was going to reinstall it today but I have decided to go to the dealer and pick up another car possibly tomorrow and I should be done installing everything by friday night since I am taking my time to install everything. I want to ensure I put everything the way I found it.

Jamie,
Make sure it shifts before you put it back in the car. Put a long screw driver in the hole on the bracket for the shift selector lever on the trans where the bolt for the shift linkage goes. You can use that to simulate shifting it. Always make sure it shifts before you instal it back in.

I am almost done installing. It is shifting fine . I just have the two axles the crossover pipes and the wheels and I should be taking a test drive by 6-8PM. I am not rushing just making sure everything is in place I dont want to short nothing out.

Not sure I quite understand what the problem actually was. Is it supposed to be between first and second when you put it back together and was actually in first? My Quaife has been sitting in my garage waiting for install. So I am trying to pick up as much info as I can and avoid problems. I have installed a clutch before myself but never opened up the tranny itself.

Thanks

there is three things that you have to make sure you do prior to closing the case. 1. make sure it is between 1st and 2nd and that can be fixed by pulling or pushing on the grey forks and there is this also this other piece that you have to bolt on from the outside of the case just line it up and the springs and check *****. Other then cleaning the surface you should be good.
