04 Max road test by Motor Trend
04 Max road test by Motor Trend
Boy am I ****ed off! The new Max with the six speed does 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and the quarter mile in 14.7. Those numbers suck compared to an 2K2 Max or an Altima. However, the interior shots are tight. The rear console really makes the car stand out. The Max is no longer a sports sedan but is starting to move towards a true luxury sedan. I don't like that all.

However, I don't think it's fair to say just yet that it's slower or just as fast as 02/03. When some mag (can't remember which) tested an 02, they got slower times in the 1/4 than some members were able to produce here. Wait until some people actually buy it, and then we'll see what they can do once they get used to the car, and break it in. My hunch is that it will be just as fast, or maybe just a slight bit slower than 02/03, but it will make up for it with more features.
I think Nissan admitted that they're simply trying to move upscale with the Maxima, so I don't think ground shattering performance is their #1 goal anymore.
Yea, the only reason why Nisan made the Maxima a Luxury car now, is because the new Altima made sales go up alot, so really, its not because they wanted to screw all maxima owners and rid the sporty image... Its all about the benjamins
it seems nissan fails to diversify their vehicles as of lately.. Between the Z, altima, G35, M45, and now the 6th gen ALL have the same general design; even though this is a classy design, the 6th gen max got the crap end of it. And the interior, GAH!
the split rear seats is a great idea but the dash and the remains of it are ugly. Maybe once theyre out on the road and we see some of them modded up a little theyll start to look a little better.
bottom line: 3rd gens still own

Car and Driver already published the 10Best List and yes, Nissan has two winners! 1. 350Z and 2. G35 sedan/coupe. Not bad! They appear to have displaced the S2000 and the A4 respectively. Mazda6 made a surprise appearance -- I have yet to see one on the streets!

Off the top of my head it looks like Civic, 5-Series, Audi A4 got bumped. Maybe I should hold my tongue, but a 3rd tier mfg namely Mazda made the 10 best? Haha look at the 5 best trucks, Honda CRV, Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey. And Accord, Focus, and Corvette seem to be very unwilling to give up their spots.
Odyssey is no joke--when I referred to my neighbor's Odyssey as a minivan, he told me you'd be surprised how this thing drives, it doesn't drive like a mini-van. When you have 3 little kids, you have to get serious about how you're gonna transport them around.

After reading the review in Motor Trend I feel Nissan did an decent job with the 2k4 Maxima. Compared to other car manufacturers, I still believe Nissan to be the best bang for the buck choice for 4-door performance. The article actually praised the 6-spd shifter!
Running through the numbers it looks like the 2k4 maxima is about 100 lbs heavier than the 2k3. I would like to see what a 2k4 max would run on 17" wheels instead of 18"s. The front brake rotor is 12.6" and the rear rotor is 11.5" yet the 2k4 max still took 10' longer to stop than the A4. Thank the goodyear eagle RS-A and the bean counter that made that decision. The A4 was running Michelin Pilot Primacy tires. Estimated epa figures are 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. Rpms at 60mph is 2250.
Maximas have always blended performance and luxury. With each succesive generation it seems there has been more emphasis on the luxury side. IMO the 2k2 and 2k3 maximas are an equal balance of performance and luxury. Compared with other cars, in the same generation so to speak, the Maxima has always been bigger, had a little more hp and the worst choice of OEM tire!
I don't see where the 6th gen differs from the 3rd, 4th, or 5th gen maximas in this trend.
Every new generation of car today is going to be heavier and bigger than it's predecessor. Everybody wants the next generation to be safer, stiffer, more comfort and more features. There's no doubt the 6th gen maxima is "movin' on up" and that there is more emphasis on luxury. But I don't see where the 6th gen maxima has foresaken it's sporty roots.

I read a preview of the 2004 Maxima in today's Toronto Star Wheels section, and the writer said it was better than the previous Maxima in every way.
He emphazied on the handling, saying it was always waiting for the next corner. Also, he said that since the Altima was there to take care of the family-car market, the Maxima was tuned for aggressive driving at the expense of ride comfort.

The new Maxima is a bright orange SE six-speed. With the sun's rays flashing through its skyview roof, its engine snarling to redline and its tires yelping enthusiastically in anticipation of the next corner, the Maxima is back, and in a really big way.

VE 5 speeds are still the best! The only thing they get owned by is the 2k2 for stock power in a straight line, but outhandle every other gen in the real world driving.
Just more proof that cars do not get better as they get newer.
Looks like us 3rd, 4th and 5th gen guys are going to run the Maxima world forever, cause we are the only decent looking and performing Maximas.
I hope no new 6th gen owners see all of our bashing on these posts. Someone will buy one and then hop on and tell us how they bought one, then we congradulate them and they search and see all the bashing.

Two things... Motor Trend is not the final authority on the new car's performance. Usually, their test numbers are way off. And about the Max becoming more of luxo-boat, Nissan planned to take it upmarket so it wouldn't get sales stolen away by the Altima.

I would have to include the 2k3 as being the last of the Maximas.
