Hey everybody, just a quick minute of your time:

You may have heard the "scam" ( I don't know what else to call it) of overpaying your moving violations? Well here's how it supposedly works...SUPPOSEDLY if you get a moving violation and overpay the fine, the RMV has to mail you back a refund of the difference. Now if you don't cash the check, the transaction never clears the system and the fine never makes it back to your insurance company. SUPPOSEDLY.

So back in August I got a $25 parking ticket and on top of that, a $20 fine for un-inspected (this is my '84 CJ-7). Which is fine, I was wrong on both counts. However, come to find out, un-inspected is a moving violation and hits you on your insurance. So, I figured it was worth the $5 to try this rather than lose my step 9 insurance rating (that's the best you can have here in MA) and I sent in $25 to pay the $20 fine.

Well Friday I got a check from the RMV for $5, and it is sitting on my shelf where it will remain forever. So phase 1 is complete. Now if phase 2 comes together I will be shocked, but I will keep you all posted.

Anyone else try this or hear of anyone having it work out for them?

Thanks for reading,

Sean

Well,

I got a speeding ticket here in georgia. GA State Patrol was lasering from a freaking overpass.

Anyway, the fine was like $200 dollars. I sent in $205. Well, they kept my extra five dollars, not even a damn refund, AND they slapped me with the ticket.

My experience is that this "scam" does not work.

We need to come up with a new one!

DOESN'T WORK!!!!

Hey-
I work for an insurance company and I can tell you that story is crazy! It might work until your next renewal on your policy and then its allll over. You see, the insurance company will order an MVR which will reveal your moving violations. WE can also order a CLUE report which will disclose any home or auto losses. You might have tricked them termorarily, but when you renewal comes up I will guarantee you that they will run the MVR report and you will be nailed!

I am sure someone will tell me I am wrong...but hell, I do it for a living....so how can I be wrong?

Well they definately owe you $5...so it better be in the mail!

And SHUMAX, I'm not saying this is foolproof, but I thought I'd try it and it seems to be working so far. I used to do RMV programming for Liberty Mutual, and their programs are FAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHKED up, so I'm willing to bet this will work with some companies. I don't have LM, though.

As far as I know it, in NYS, it goes on the MVR about one month after judgement, whether or notyou paid the fine. BTW, MaximaZero nice job w/Photoshop, but is it just me or does that look ALOT like modded Civic?

He's not talking about avoiding the insurance raise (I don't think), but rather avoiding points and a suspended license.
any insurance saves are bonus I guess

hmmm

Maybe I miss understood. If he is truly doing this to avoid license suspension he probably will for a while. However, his email suggested that they would ~never~ figure it out. Regardless what his INTENT it he WILL get caught. Will they fine him? No, but his actions will only delay his insurance rates hikes or suspension of his license by the state.
As far as the guy who worked for Liberty Mutual or whatever....the company doesn't run the MVR. We hire that out to another company who's only job is to process MVR's. Never once have I seen an error on any of their MVR's. Now credit reports do have errors. unfortunately that is up to the individual to correct! I think that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard....we will produce a credit report on you, but if it contains errors its your duty to pay $10 to ge a copy and then fight with people for months about items on that report. Great idea, huh?

Anyways...good luck avoiding it. I wish it would work forever for ya. At best you'll get away with it for a year.

Well looking at basic accounting practices-->>

at some point that $5 will be written off the books and your penalties will be fowarded as normal.. Good luck.. I doubt it works, though.

Ah, people are so gullible... From the Massachusits DMV homepage (and this applies to pretty much every other state):

I can actually understand where something this strange may sound true, but it isn’t. Follow this route and the only thing you will do is create more work for everyone. The Registry does, in fact, issue refund checks for overpayment and for your sake we hope that you will deposit them. But even if you don’t cash the check, the system will still charge you any surcharge points.

Now, make sure you look in your backseat before you get in your car to make sure there isn't a man with a hook for a hand hiding there, and don't eat pop rocks and drink coke together!

The original version of this that I heard years ago didn't sound like it originated in this country. The author spoke of violations that 'take points off' your license. In the U.S. violations put points on your license, not take them off. The spelling of some words also followed standards used in the U.K.

Are there any members from other countries that could comment on this?
