Well, I'm finally actually using a product that I have been touting for the past 6 months and got Amsoil 5W-30 and an Amsoil filter into the 99. I still haven't received my test results from Blackstone Labs and Oil Analyzers, Inc. on the ULX-110 dino oil, so hopefully I'll be able to share those results sometime this week. I will be going 25k for intervals, and have already sent off the 1k interval sample to be analyed by Amsoil. Then, whenever I change the oil (probably in a year rather than 25k, but we'll see), I'll send another sample to them for analysis and comparison between the values at 1k and those at 25?k.

Anyway, I noticed something about the Amsoil SDF oil filters comared to the Mobile 1. Notice the descrepancy in height between the two. The Amsoil filter is about half as high as the Mobil 1 filter. Any guesses on why this is?

I remember Jeff92se mentioning this about the Toyota OEM oil filters that he uses on his VE, that they were smaller yet had more effective surface area for filtering compared to the Nissan OEM oil filters. Is this the same case here?

Or is bigger better?

You would have to probably cut the cases off and take a good look at them Bill. I can't really comment about the Toyota filter. I would have to do the same.

Bill,

Size doesn't matter, it's how you us... wait.. sorry
;-)

Size really doesn't matter that much, I think it's the flow rate and filter capacity. BTW I have heard that it's possible to use a filter too big... it could cause a drop if oil pressure...

Jeff!

C'mon, not even a good BS answer?

No speculation?!?

I just found it curious when I was changing them out....You would think that the smaller it is, the better you would have to build the casing to withstand the extra pressure (especially at startup) generated from the decreased volume available. This would translate into Amsoil really having to build a quality filter (like Toyota) to withstand that extra pressure....

Amsoil Oil Filters

The Amsoil dealer you bought from should have a taller filter the same specifications if you like...I know I used to sell it when I had time. The height advantage is that you end up with a few more ounces of oil to work that much better for the engine.

I think that's right, Jeff -->

I remember reading on the Mopar Oil Filter Study page somewhere that Wix made them, although I can't find it right now......

Your other post seemed as if you were 'distracted' so that's why I was wondering where the love was.....

Good luck with the Camry guys...

Stupid me,

It's Baldwin, not Wix. He mentions it here which is oil filter 'overview' page rather than the study page...

I'm not really aware of who Baldwin is, do you?

Did you read the air filter information? The k&n sucked for fitration and filter life. The life portion would seem to agree w/ my experience w/ K&N panel and cone filters. I have to clean it every 5k or so. When the filters are new or clean, the car performs great, when the filter gets dirty, the performance and noise noticably goes down. Amsoil only has their panel and pod style(which is really small) I wish they had a cone style available, I would try it in a minute.

before getting into the Amsoil business, I never heard of Baldwin either. they are a big name in the farming industry. all of the Amsoil filters are rebadged Baldwin filters. they are not K&N filters if anyone is wondering!

nissan filters

my car is still under warranty, and i'm sticking with the filters right from the nissan dealer till the warranty expires. In the meantime, i HAVE switched to Mobil 1 synthetic. Whats so dreadfully wrong with the Nissan filters??? just curious

Uhh....nothing.

I'm not aware of anyone complaining about Nissan's oil filters.

But, when you change to Amsoil synthetic oil, they recommend using their own brand filters. By doing so, you can extend the drain interval to 25k miles. Amsoil recommends changing the oil filter at 12,500 miles. I ASSUME that the paper media filter in the Amsoil filters would last longer than the Nissan ones.

If you go extended drain intervals with Mobile 1 (i.e. 10,000 miles or so), then changing the Nissan filter at 5k is probably a good idea.....

If you want more info on Amsoil, use the handy search feature and type in "Amsoil" and read for the next several hours....
