like the subject says... which is better tire

sumitomo htrz or kumho supra 712 they are both pretty cheap

and read good things about them but which is better?

 

go for the kumhos... the treadwear rating is 280 as opposed to the horrible 160 of the sumitomo htrz's

 

with rating of 280... does that grip the road pretty good considering it's pretty hard tire...... ya i guess the 160 rating tires would be replaced in less then one year the way i drive

 

I have the Kumhos. They are excellent under all conditions for which they were made for - dry and wet. When worn down however, like all tires, they begin to lose wet traction.

 

the sumitomos are stickier, but its really not worth it to go through tires that quick.. its not bad if you take the wheels off for the winter and all, but within the first few days i had my htrz's on i noticed the edge of the front tires already were a little rubbed looking (not worn, but the rubber looked different than the rest of the tire)

 

Tire treadwear ratings are proprietry and assigned by the manufacturer themselves, not an outside standardizing agency, so you can't compare one tire manufacturers treadwear rating to anothers with any guarantee of consistency.

Sumitomo's 160 treadwear may last just as long as Kumho's 260 since they may be based on a different scale.

I'm not sure what size you are looking at, but if they are available get the Sumitomo HTRZ-II rather than the HTRZ or the Ecsta 712. It's a superior tire in every way, and since you are concerned with treadwear its got a 220 treadwear (higher than the 160 for the HTRZ) and AA traction rating compared to the other two tires' A traction rating. They are only about $10 more too.

I had the HTR Zs on my 16" Kosei K1s and the tires were amazing. I never got to exploit the limits of the tire because the stuck so hard. They were by far the stickiest tires I ever owned and they looked and rode great too. I didn't have any problems with the wear of the tires. I get rid of the tire/rim combo when the tires had 7000 miles. The fronts still had 70% life left and the rears looked new and this was with about 20 1/4 mile passes on them too. I've heard the Kumhos ride like crap and really don't perform all that well.

I currently have the HTR+s on my 17s and they stick nearly as well as well the HTRZs plus they go in the snow and even a better wear rating. They might be another decent tire to take a look at.

FYI, Sumitimo is owned by Dunlop which is owned by Goodyear.

i have to look around for that sumitomo with rating 220 that sounds pretty good

 

I had the Sumitomo HTRZ II and they were a great tire, I had no problems with them over the course of a year and sold them with about 75% tread left, also I don't drive like a bat outta hell.

 

My Khumos seem to have gotten extremely hard as time goes on. They don't seem to grip that well at all anymore. They've got around 15,000 miles on them and still have great tread left though.

the 712s are okay, but there's definitely a better tire out there. I've been using them for the last couple of years (3 sets in 2 years).. I drive like a maniac, so I usually only get 8-10k miles out of a set.
I'm going to be switching to Sumitomo this week on my "new" rims and I'll give a report on the differences.

New rims? Are you cleaning up your 16s or are you going with something new? For your driving style, get the HTRZs assuming Oklahoma isn't going to get much more snow.

well i have decided to get the sumitomo htrz II and i them for $500 from local tire shop...... and now i don't know why i didn't chance the factory tires out sooner.... it's is so much better....
