I feel for ya. I was once in college, then I got smart and dropped out. I've been around since Peels BBS. That was back in '99. The boards have helped me with everything from ECU codes to where to get the cheapest parts to making money on the side installing new clutches. I can't remember the last time I went to a dealer to get service, or the last time I called a dealer or mechanic to ask advice on how to do something. All the information is readily available right here on maxima.org. You just have the use the SEARCH feature...(hint hint newbies!) Its hard to say how it will change our lives in the future, because we don't realize that it has already changed our lives now.

I think I've been here for a little over a year.

And the info has DEFINATLY changed the way I view automobiles, mine in particular. It has given me options to upgrade, and personalize my car, as well as maintaining it for optimal performance, and re-sale value.

If you think about it the Org or any such website skews your entire perspective of the car world. It used to be that when you had a car your experiences, good or bad, were pretty much your own. People were more willing to tolerate quality issues because you didn't know of entire community out there with the same problem. They say information is power and I think this is a great example.

Before this site the only resource you had for car mods was a friend or the local speed shop. I've done things to my car I would never have thought of without the Org.

I wish I would have run accross the ORG before I bought my max because I would have made different decisions. Ever since I've been here I've been reading through most of forums to find out new ideas, troubleshooting tips, advice, and don't let me forget to metions the info on mods is priceless

Here's an Idea

Since the org is so wonderful and has help us all with the amount of free knowledge, how's bout we all give something back in the form of a donation. This is barely a drop in the bucket of all the money we have saved by having access to this knowledge. We could have a better faster site if we all chiped in a bit. 5 bucks isn't to much to ask for a cool sticker is it?

Uh.. wtf kinda data communications class is that? My data communications is about.. real.. data communications. Like how to modulate a DSL signal to a frequency far above voice on the phone line so as to not interfere. Lots of differential equations, stocastic methods, fourier analysis, etc.

Also, .. about the "online forums paper" - this is not a new technology. In fact, it is one of the oldest uses of computer communication. The current form of it has been around pretty much since the web started, and before that was primarily the domain of Dialup Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's). One place you might look for information is usbbs.org which has been a monthly publication on BBS's since 1984.

i said mine was similar to that, not the same thing... "Subject Matter: Pick a dominant or major technology used im communications or networking. Discuss its practical application by a real organization/company, the perceived need it fills for them, and where you think it will go (its next stage of development or practical application)...."

1) Member since 1998

2) The wealth of information in this site is amazing. This is one of the few sites where there are true experts helping you trouble shoot your car, modify your car, and race your car. It simply is amazing. I've saved myself thousands of dollars in repairs and trouble shooting simply because of the information and help on the Org.

3) This internet/forum technology changes peoples lives because they come to realize that cars really aren't that complicated. They end up doing the work themselves and they save a ton of money. Many start realizing shops are screwing them, etc. Even if you don't do the work yourself, you can tell your mechanic what the potential problem could be and where to look, etc.

4) Donate money to the Org.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off like that. I was probably doing homework for said insanely hard class at the time. Nor did I claim to be a genius, just further along in that subject in school. My bad. Good luck on the paper.

ok, I just got one question. I don't mean to offend the org either.
Just a bit curious as to why the org. needs donations. I've been on plenty of other forums/boards, and they never had a problem with server being overloaded or asking for donations to keep the site up. Like I said, I don't want to get anybody angry, but I just gotta know why. Yes, the org gives lots of information, and I myself have learned alot in my 3 months here, but why is this such a problem??

Once again, just want to know, don't mean to offend anybody on the org.

I've browsed a few other forums on the web, but NONE of them came even close to the amount of traffic that Maxima.org sees. Therefore, it requires faster/better/more expensive hardware to support the load. Other sites, which don't see a lot of users, can get away with using cheaper servers and all of their components.

This is just a stab in the dark, cause I'm not sure exactly how much traffic other sites get, but this is definitely a contributing factor.

First, read this thread

Basically, bandwidth costs money. That's the one thing that can't be "volunteered" (and the amount of time it takes to organize and maintain a popular forum also costs a great deal of money, if you value your time at all) The more popular a forum becomes, the more expensive it becomes to operate.

A lot of sites can be supported by advertising, or "angels" who donate server space, bandwidth, etc. Seems that the org is not one of them. I've seen my share of sites shut down thanks to their own popularity. I'd very much rather maxima.org didn't become one of them, so I've sent my donation

Dude, I know others have already picked on you for this, but I gotta beat the dead horse here. If you're going to post a thread requesting information for an academic exercise, THEN TAKE THE TIME TO SPELL-CHECK YOUR POST. Using punctuation and correct grammar wouldn't hurt either. At least that way, we'd be reassured that the information we give you might actually find its way into a coherent term paper.

Now then, let's talk about this whole "research wont be boring to me" thing. Sounds like another way of saying "I'm a lazy student who'd rather BS on forumz than do actual work". In this case, doing a bit of research FIRST would have netted you a whole lot more information than this lazy post you threw up here.

And just to drive the point home, here's your answers:

Q. how long u people have been members??????
A. 5 months.

Q. how it has changed recieving information about our vehicles??????
A. By "it", I assume you mean maxima.org. But do you mean how "it" has changed receiving information about *my* vehicle, or do you mean how "it" has changed receiving information about *our* vehicles, meaning all maxima.org members, or all people who visit online forums, or all people who own vehicles--all of which are reasonable but TOTALLY DIFFERENT questions. And isn't this pretty much the basic question behind your term paper? If so, how do you expect us to respond? By writing your paper for you? I don't get it.

Q. and how this technology will eventually change our lives??????
A. Sounds like another term paper. I mean, the parameters of your question are pretty broad. What kind of answer are you expecting here? First of all, what do you mean by "this technology"? Are we talking specifically about "PHP-based online forum serving the maxima enthusiast community" or are we talking about "All online forums serving car enthusiast communities", or is it "All online forums" period? Makes a pretty big difference, if you ask me.

Not too helpful for your term paper, was it? Well, what can I say. Personally, I think you chose a fantastic topic for a term paper. I'd *love* to write at length about how online forums have affected our lives, because I think it'd reveal some truly interesting things about how communications and information-sharing has changed in the past decade.

I hope you choose to do some actual work and research in writing this term paper of yours. If you do, I hope you come back here with some more specific questions, or at least some general topics of *discussion*, rather than the insolent bs you posted above.

And one more piece of advice. It wouldn't hurt to actually pay attention to this thread and RESPOND to the many many replies its generated. Geez.

What course is this research paper for? Is your focus on the (1) technology and/or (2) changes in the way people communicate? From your reference to "internet forumz", I take it your looking at the application as much as you the enabling technology.

The few comments I have about this forum is:
- it creates a virtual community among enthusiasts where distance is not a barrier to sharing of information/experiences
- time is not a barrier given format in which questions/answers are posted.
- information is searcheable!!! That's the "power" behind the forum where info is not only archived but extractable
- the success of the forum is also attributed to the way it was "architected" (kudos to the original co-founders!)

not to step on ur toes, but loosen up a bit. He's here asking questions in hopes of writting a decent term paper. that's it, who cares if you think he's lazy or what not, who cares if his grammer or delivery of words isn't what you would expect. it's good enough that he's exerting the effort to post here on the .org in hopes of getting answers from people. i'm pretty sure his post didn't say "please lecture me on my grammer and try to deduce why i have decided to do my research on the .org" personally i think he is optimizing his situation. perhaps doing a paper on global peace isn't his thing, and to make his stay in college more enjoyable, he'de rather pick a topic that is of his interest. as a memember of maxima.org to another member of the maxima.org, loosen up, life is too short to be uptight. this is a leisure forum, it's not politics.
-daniel

to answer the questions.
1. i've been on the .org since 99 or so.
2. the .org has change my perception on family sedans. i started out griping about how maximas had a major lack of aftermarket support. then as more and more members joined, more and more complaints about the lack of aftermarket support were being made. gradually the demand for more aftermarket parts grew and bold and courageous members have stepped up to the plate and came up with products to help enhance our maximas. slowly but surely, the complaints about the lack of aftermarket support calmed.
this happened because of the availibilty of internet to many of us. to me i see the .org and other online communities as a bridge. it is a bridge that allows many of us that are from far distances to meet.

A few thoughts (sorry so long)

Sagamax,
This may be late for you but some things to think about.
In addition to some of the fine insights you've already recieved:

Forum discussion sites such as the org tend to be environments that inform and add a human condition commonality within the context of a certain subject (i.e. the Nissan Maxima and it's derivatives). Where there is the obvious Q&A discussions that are opinion in nature, there is also a degree of feedback that was unto previously not available for the Manufacturer. Nissan can learn of a more global presence and "hive-mentality" opinion base that previously would only exist from it's current feedback mechanisms. This unbridled communication is worth gold to any manufacturer that can garner un-biased opinion and reflection for it's technecal and marketing departments. There are no infomational groups that can gather such information for any amount of money. It affects market direction and manifests itself in the manufacturers 3 year upcoming plans. For an example, Honda has seen the proliferation of the aftermarket and the interest garnered from internet resources ( a guess here) and this year are affering a "performance package" from their dealerships that include styling as well as performance upgrades (i.e. pretty rice but there you go).

Another view of the forum discussion is the concept of the contrast of individualistic migration versus peer acceptance. Where through the org we see a predominance of general "right and wrong things to do" from a peer acceptance viewpoint (i.e. no salad bars, yes rsb's) there also exists an idea pool from which to express our individualistic tendancies. You see a stillen lip on the same car as yours and "Man, would that look good with my carbon fiber hood" - (Carbon fiber being usually used for weight reduction elsewhere in the world and the Stillen kit adding weight - at least it's an indivual choice). Without the org, our opinions have no shaping influence and the availability of such components are either outside of our reach or knowledge base.

Without the org, surely less than 10% of the members here would have modded their cars to any degree past what was available at their local parts store, thus letting the market dictate their creativity. As a result of the org (as mentioned by an earlier post) the throng of interested indivuals have dictated a need in the market and good ole capitalism has responded with the supply.

Outside of the topic of the org, forum discussions in general have become another base of friendship building. People can be more open with their opinions without fear of conflict (except for the occasional flamefest). This opens up more honest dialogue. I have met people (often much younger than myself) that I have great respect for that, outside of the org, I would have never had the opportunity (nor inclination) to ever meet. Faceless people that you gather a respect for BEFORE meeting them in person is an amazing thing. When you meet them and it dispels the vision you had of what they look like - you quickly accept them for the person they actually are, not what you would have thought of a first meeting by appearances. In this respect, this form of communication has made us less shallow and a more non-biased species as a whole. Rather heady statement, but the "Global Village" concept has had some very good repurcussions. Perhaps this is why Internet dating has been somewhat sucessful as long as people have been honest with their self evaluations and intentions.

The .org tends to feed on itself as well. It becomes a common ground where a base of interaction and acceptance (which every human craves) can be derived. Because it is tied intimately with the subject matter, indinuals tend to put more emphasis on their cars in their daily lives that would not have been prevalent without the interaction.

I apologize that this is so long but I've enjoyed the org for almost a year now (and Maximas for 13 yrs). It truly is an obsessive compulsion that I also truly enjoy. It does shape character and will become a large source of memories for many of the younger members - I believe the memories will be fond ones.
