WOMAN DEAD AFTER POLICE CHASE
Author(s): MICHAEL ROSENWALD and STEFANY MOORE Date: March 5, 2003 Page: B2 Section: Metro/Region
A woman in her 20s was killed and two other people were injured when a speeding sports car slammed head-on into a sedan late last night on the Jamaicaway overpass between Boston and Brookline, authorities said.
The car the woman was riding in was apparently struck by a silver BMW that had been fleeing Brookline police and crossed the center line, authorities said. The woman's name was not released. Initial reports from investigators indicated that Brookline police officers had "broken off the chase but that the vehicle continued to flee," according to State Police spokesman Paul Maloney.
State Police are handling the investigation because the road is state-owned.
Early this morning, Captain Peter Scott, spokesman for the Brookline Police Department, said the person driving the BMW was arrested by State Police. He said he did not have the identity of the suspect nor the charges filed against him. Scott also said the two departments were working to determine the events leading to the crash.
Scott declined to say whether Brookline officers had been pursuing the BMW. One man who said he was walking his dog along the Jamaicaway said he saw two Brookline cruisers with their roof lights on and with sirens sounding following the BMW moments before the collision.
A passenger in the woman's Honda Civic was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the driver of the BMW went to Brigham and Women's Hospital. The severity of their injuries was not known last night.
TWO WOMEN KILLED IN CAR ACCIDENTS

Two people were killed in separate accidents yesterday in Saugus. A woman was killed and two others injured in a two-car collision last night on Route 107 near Ballard Street. The cause of the crash was being investigated, and Saugus police did not identify the victim. A man and a child were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, a hospital official said. Early yesterday, a 22-year-old woman was killed in a single-car accident on Route 1. Heather Bernhard of Rowley was traveling southbound just before 1 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle, overcorrected, and hit a snowbank and a sign pole, which crushed the roof of the car and trapped her inside, said State Police Sergeant David Paine. Police said drinking and excessive speed were factors in the crash.
