tools: need to buy jackstands/jack lift... help

hey guys

Basically, I need the jack/lift and jackstands. I want to buy a kit... I went down to autozone and I saw they had a set for like 30 or 40 bucks. I believe it was 1 ton jackstands and the lift. I'll probably use it once in a while for maintenance (rotating tires, changing oil, blah blah).

Are these kits too cheap? My parents were iffy about me getting it because it might be unsafe. Also, is 1 ton enough to handle the maxima? I want to know if other members bought these kits from autozone. I wouldn't mind spending an extra 20 or so to get a better kit. Anyone recommend me a place to get these? Any feedback will be much appreciated

edit: got the word chock and hydraulic lift mixed up

A 1-ton lift is not enough to lift the Maxima, but probably enough to lift one end or the other. The problem you're going to run into is that a 1-ton lift probably won't take the car very far off the ground. I'd find a good 3-ton lift...it will likely have more clearance. You want to be able to get the front or rear end of the car at least 20" off the ground to be valuable.

Try SEARS

Sears has a sale going on now that includes a 3 ton jack, jackstands, and a free creeper, with 10% off it's 119 - 11.90 around 108. THese are something you'll use all your life. Get a good one the first time out. Also, I believe the jack lifts to like 20 inches, which is good in case you ever own an SUV or pickup that sits higher.

Thanks for the idea. Actually i went to Costco... bought a pair of 6-ton jackstands for 17.99! That place is sooooo freakin uber... i am gonna get my oil from there too ($24.99 for a case of Mobil 1 Synthetic). I am on the lookout for a jack lift now.

btw: I am curious to know if a 13" clearance from the ground is ok.... is that too mucH?? Like what i mean is, I just measured the jackstand on the lowest setting and it is 13" high from the ground. That isn't too much right?

Lift

I always, and I mean always try Wallmart first. I know it's ghetto but you save a lot of cash by going there. I bought 1 ton stands for 8 bucks.

it's spelled walmart! lol... anywho, yeah i will go check it out. Paying 10 bucks for more a 6-ton jackstands isn't that bad. I am gonna head out to Kragen or maybe Autozone to see what kind of jack lifts they have. Hopefully I can find at least a 3-ton for 20 bucks. I still think Costco is cheaper tho!

go to wal-mart

I bought a kit with a 2 ton hydraulic jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, and a lug wrench for 40. Yeah, it's wal-mart, but hey it's cheap, and I used it to install my RSB and change my wheels here and there, so it works.

Well it looks like I'm heading down to Walmart today then haha. I needed to buy some battery terminals anyways... I hope they sell hydraulic jack alone. Thanks for recommending walmart guys, i totally forgot about that place.

I went to sears and got a good deal on a jack. A Craftsman 2 1/4 ton hydralic jack and 2 jack stands for like $35. Its plenty to lift a I30 which is heavier then a maxima. Its also about 1000x faster then that POS stock jack they give us.

I brought a motormaster (I think its a Canadian thing? I think its similar to craftman or is that sears stuff?) anyways... got a motormaster 2 1/4 ton jack with two jackstands for $60 canadian, thats $40 American the lift range is 5-16"

going to test it out tomorrow with a tire rotation & FSB suspension bushings

Hey, that's a GRRRRRRRRRREAT idea. Go get the cheapest things you can find when you're looking for items that are protecting your life.

Nadir - did you get the Jackson Racing jackstands at Costco? Those are really top notch if they're the ones I'm thinking of. You get the ratchet action for holding as well as a pin to slide through for extra safety.

On the jack issue I suggest picking one up from sears. That deal with the jack, stands and creeper is pretty phenomenal. 13" is not too high for the low setting. My 3.5 ton jack lifts to 22" and it's low profile so it slides in easily even though I'm lowered. Don't skimp on these items.

It's not Jackson Racing brand. It says Arcan ? Whatever it is, it does come w/ the ratchet system as well as the safety pin. It looks good enough!

As for as the jack, I will head out to sears today to check it out. Thanks for the info guys.
