Unorthodox UDP installed Install tips and impressions. (long)
I installed my Unorthodox Racing UDP last Thursday (3-6), I had attempted the install the week before but was held up because of a stubborn crankshaft bolt and lack of proper tools. I did come up with a few tips that may help others on this install, Ill list my tips first.
After being held up the week before by a stubborn crankshaft bolt I went out and bought a ½ drive 18 long breaker bar and some PB blaster (A penetrating oil). I had sprayed some PB blaster on the bolt a few days before and I sprayed some more on it just before I attempted to loosen it. I was shocked when the bolt came loose with a few tugs on the breaker bar. My car is a 98 with almost 100k miles in New England and this is the first time the crankshaft bolt was removed. I didnt have a helper available to step on the brakes but I got creative (Remember the brake lights stay on when the brake pedal is pushed and will kill your battery)-
The hardest part for me was getting to the adjustment bolt on the power steering pump. You need a universal swivel and one or more long extension bars. I could only find one of my extension bars (long story) so I barely had room to work the socket handle back and forth. The adjustment bolt requires lots of turns to move the PS pump any distance and I had to move it from near its farthest adjustment point to its closest - it was taking forever. I have an adapter that lets me use my cordless drill to drive sockets, with this I moved the PS pump to its closest adjustment in less than a minute. My ratcheting wrenches made loosening the locking bolts on the PS pump and idler pulley a snap. Removing the oil seal took quite a bit of prying but that could have been due to the cold temperatures. I sprayed some belt dressing on the belts as a preventive measure and there is no squeeling or slipping of the belts.
Driving Impressions
There is definitely a modest but noticeable power gain across the entire RPM range and the gain in the lower RPMs (2000-4000) is unmistakable. The throttle feels like it needs the lightest of touches to accelerate during normal driving in 2nd and 3rd gear. The low end gain would do little or nothing at the track but for around town driving it is fantastic. I would definitely recommend this Mod to anybody. I did not notice any problem starting off smoothly with my 5 speed like some have mentioned.
- Have the proper tools (Duh.) Other than a socket set and wrenches --
A ½ drive 18 long breaker bar and ½ drive 19mm socket (if you dont have an impact wrench)
Several long extensions (for getting at the adjustment bolt on the power steering pump.)
Universal swivel attachment (ditto)
A good penetrating oil (not WD40), I used PB blaster (it smells so bad it must do something :P)
Ratcheting wrenches are helpful but not absolutely necessary - Spray some penetrating oil on the crankshaft bolt a few days before you do the install to let it soak in.
- Get the car good and high to give yourself room to work (safely of course)
- It is possible to lock the brakes without a helper (5speed, see below)
- I used a power drill attachment to turn the power steering adjustment bolt. (see below)
- If you push the brake pedal down the brake lights stay on, even when the ignition is off.
- Do not do the install outside when the temp is in the low teens and it is snowing :/

There are no strange noises at startup or any other time with the UDP. If it the noise is from the belts (screeching or squeeling noise) they could need to be tightened, or perhaps some belt dressing would help.
I have a digital voltage gauge and did notice at idle with lots of accesories turned on somtimes voltage would drop below 12 volts. However under all other driving conditions my voltage is the same as before the UDP. I am pretty sure my battery is on its way out, so that could be part of the problem.

devotion! i know the feeling. i was outside in december changin my oil... but that doesnt compare. i plan on adding the UDP to my mod list this summer, along with headers, y-pipe, and cat-back. i want so much to do it all at once and feel some crazy gains... glad to hear that the UDP is worth it though!

Would that noise by any chance be a a squeaking noise that gets louder as you accelerate? (I just had my UDP taken off)

nice write up. I have the UDP also and was concerned about low voltage at idle with a/c, lights, etc on but it was not the case with me.
WOW install in the snow...not sure if you are nutz or just mod nutz....maybe both?
Anyway great job

What Oil seal did you have to remove? Did you replace it with a new one, or it had to be removed to install the UDP?
