How often are you supposed to replace plug wires on the VQ? Also, how hard is it, and what's the best brand/place to buy them? I think I will also try some Denso Iridium plugs while I'm at it, if anybody knows where to get a good deal on those.
Thanks.

maxima's do not use conventional spark plug wires. Rather, we have separate coils for each spark plug....meaning that there are no spark plug wires to replace.

curious too

I am a bit curious about that--I know the Maximas (I own a 97 gle) and the spark plugs aren't supposed to be changed until 60K, but what about those wires that are plugged into, and connected to each one of the spark plugs--do those wires need to be changed? Or is it that we only need to change the spark plugs only...I thought there were some wires we need to change...
I hope someone can clear this up for me.

thanks =)

No plug wires! ->

the reason plug wires need to be changed in dist/one coil equipped cars is becuase it carries high voltage current. Since your Maxima has a coil on each plug. The only high voltage current there is runs directly from the coil to the plug. The wires that attach are only the low voltage "signal" current. Just like any other wire in your engine's wiring harness.

I guess what I meant was the coil packs, and not the plug wires. Do these ever need to be replaced? (I have 120K miles)

I have yet to hear of a coil pak for a VQ

go bad. Some Ve coils(same ignition) have started to go bad though. Nissan does not indicate a service interval for coil packs. Good thing too as they are fairy pricey. You replace them when they go bad.

thanks very much for the info on the spark plugs...
so when the 60K tuneup rolls around--only the plugs need to be change, huh? that is good news (less work for me).
by the way, have you checked out the price of these nGK plugs? almost $10 a peice--any words on using Bosch Platinium plugs? are they about the same in terms of performance?
any wise words would be a great enlightenment.

thanks =)

Re: jeff92se

Jeff K has all the 60k interval info on his site. do a search for his name and you will get a link to his site. Nice site.

Plugs. go to Courtesy Nissan for the best price for the oem NGK plats. Mention the maximal.org name though. I can't recommend the Bosch plats. I have heard from another knowledgable maxima guy that they don't seem to work as well and don't seem to hold up for as long. Put it this way, you only have to change them every 60k. They will be in there for quite awhile, don't skimp on this one and get the correct stuff. Your VQ will thank you for it

I had a coil go bad

I went in for my 60K service and the mechanic said that there's a hairline crack in one of the coils. He put some goop on it and said it could last the life of the car, but there was no guarantees. A new one costs about $135...I am thinking about changing it just to be safe. Does anyone know how hard it is to change?

It's really easy->

Just keep an eye on it. I wouldn't replace it if it's not giving you problems;.
