max vs volvo 850

Test drived a 97 volvo 850 T5 today. My wife feels we need a more square car with more luggage space. Yaaa, it's square. It is turbochagred and rated at 222hp. Once inside you feel like you've been neatly packed into a suitcase. But what amazes me is throttle response. This car seems so plugged up. My 95 maxima SE auto is much more responsive from 0 to 60, or from 60 to 90. Volvo just stops pulling after 80.
I think, I will keep my max a while longer.
So I joined this club.

looks like Volvo finally busted out
The new S60 is pretty nice, saw one while getting gas on Saturday. I did ride in the new V70 wagon and it's very nice--no longer based on the 850 but on the S80. V70 looks like a winner, we've already got tons of them going to and from the airport. For some reason the wagon looks nice and it shed the goofy look that the sedan had. Just have to keep it under control, anything over 200 is hard to utilize when the car is FWD.

I agree with Vapors
I dont knowwhat turbo you drove but My mom owns a 95 850 GLT not turbo but GLT and it still pulls I mean that car is very responsive Id say more than a Maxima. Its suspension is performance tuned, engine inline 5 dont know how much horse power but it can haul. Push the Sport Button to make it shift at later higher RPM and mmmmm mm. I love it. Not a Flame . Just info on what I have witnessed, I agree with peace!

They are quick. I was getting on the hwy behind one driven by a 55 yr old lady (i'm guessing at her age) and I had to really get on the gas just to keep up. She had 850 Turbo sedan. She knew I was trying b/c she quickly sped to 90 or so and backed down to 75 as I was trying to pas her. She put me in my place...and I have a 5 speed and kept it in 3rd...

My dad has a 96 850 turbo. Nice car. Me and my bro lined up once, me in the turbo, him in the max. Max was 110% stock and we went up to 100 and were side by side. my bro had a really nice launch too... The vovlo is a auto though.

you are right there is low compression and a High compression turbo volvo's.You choose at the dealer how you want it. Ive lived around VOLVOS all my life. My parents first volvo was a 1985 740 GLE 5 speed. Great car, held up very well. Was in emaculate condition. Then for christmas my dad traded it in for the 95 850 GLT in Christmas of 94 for my moms Christmas present. Its an auto but It is still Quick. The 95's were the ones that got the rear end Facelift. In Killeen(Ft. Hood),Texas we were the first to have that year with that design. And that color. Its rare to see the Amethyst color. I only saw two that moved from Germany that had them. Then here In ATL so far Ive seen only three in that color besides my moms car.

We might be confusing the 850R/T5R with "regular" 850
The 850R and T5R (both with the 17" wheels standard) were 246hp and pretty sick fast for an auto. High 6-second runs to 60 were the norm and with a chip and exhaust from IPD you can bump 'em to just a tad over 300hp. In a sedan or wagon. Nice. Stock trim they're about as quick as a healthy 5spd maxima.
The standard 850 turbo is a decently quick car but not as tire-smokey as the "R" models.
I drove an 850R a few weeks ago, I was pretty convinced that I needed one but it just didn't do it for me. Steering was a little wooden for a european car, the skinny low profile tires pushed into corners and lit too easily coming out, turbo lag was very noticable and the interior looked dated. Good deal though.. you can pick those things up for low twenties in good shape.
I think an 850 done right would be righteous. Ditch those crappo PZeros (never liked 'em) for something wider and stickier, do the chip and exhaust and hang on!
I'm too enchanted by the looks of the 3-series to live with a Volvo I think. Too bad, 'cause they're cool cars.
