HELP: Insurance! [Long]

Ok, I'm 23 years old, I have had a clean driving record for seven years except for two minor sign violations, both of which were more than three years ago. I was on my parents' insurance policy (Liberty Mutual) for six years, from 16 to 22, and of course they never had to pay out to me because I had no claims. So I should be on good terms with this company.

Well, I call up the local office (parents live in Wisconsin, I now live in Virginia) and they tell me that those six years of spotless record on my parents' policy count for NOTHING. Virginia (maybe other states too) has a rule that if you haven't been insured for the past 60 days, you can't claim to be "currently insured" and unless you're currently insured the dumbass insurance companies treat you as if you have NO record whatsoever. This is so unfair. If I'd known about this, my parents might have been able to keep me on their policy until now.

Anyway, they quoted me at $3100/year which is insane. It would be only $1500/year if I were still on my parents' policy. F$ck that. The agent said the only thing I could do was sign up with another insurer (he recommended Progressive for people with no current insurance), and as soon as I have that policy, I count as "currently insured" in the "insured for under six months" category, which is better than nothing. Then I would cancel the first policy and sign on with the second at a better rate. This seems so ridiculous, but I can do it if I have to. I'm doubtful that it will actually get me a much better rate, though.

It's not like I'm a 16-year-old with speeding tickets, DUI arrests, or accidents, so this is really p!$$ing me off. I also graduated with a 3.3 GPA from a top-tier college, so I should get any good-student bonus.

So everyone my age who is insured (I hope all of you are), give me advice! Tell me what companies you recommend, what you're paying (if you want), and how I can get a fair rate. I was hoping to pay around $100-$150 per month at the outset. Is that feasible? I live in the DC metro area, which means rates are on the high side.

This is the only thing holding me back from buying a 4th-gen 5-speed that I want so desperately! Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I am 19 with a clean driving record and my company quoted me $1800/6 months for my 1999 Maxima! I am also with my parents. So I shopped around, Progressive quoted me $3100/6 months!!! Allstate gave me $1200/6 months, and that is with me on my own policy. And I do not have a 3.0 GPA or higher. So I am positive that you would go even lower with a higher GPA. Allstate also lowers the ins. at the age of 21 and 25, at least in Minnesota. The agent at my ins. company told me that Maximas have very high insurance rates. They have a rating of 17. I think the $150 range is very feasable.

21 (on my own policy) one point on record from speeding, full coverage with rental car and the whole nine yards, no school discount cause I'm not in school. Maxima was $110 / month. Plus they'd give me another 10% off if I do a defensive driving course.

I pay $1200 for 6 months, and I think think I am with with my mom's insurance, she has Amica. But Amica is picky on who the pick to insure. The best thing you can do is just call and shop around.

If you are under 25, I wouldn't recommend getting your own insurance. The prices are crazy!!

So are all you guys that are paying $100 to $150 piggybacking on your parents' policies? In other words, (1) are you still under your parents' policy and just paying them your share or (2) were you on their policy when you applied for your own insurance, got a good rate because of that, and then your parents took you off theirs? Neither (1) nor (2) applies to me, unfortunately. Did any of you find good rate in a situation like mine?

Thanks a ton for the responses so far. I'll check out Allstate and Essurance and others.

Came over from the netherlands last may, not having a drivers licence (cost of driving + licence unaffordable) , live in louisiana now. I'm 25, got my licence in september of last year, got a 1997 GXE about a month ago. got it insured without any previous history of driving or insurance for $105 a month at state farm. which i thought was rather expensive at the time coz my previous car, a SAAB 9000 turbo was insured for 45 dollars a month. but reading all this i guess i should jus keep my mouth shut and be happy with it.
