Getting rid of the Max...Suggestions?

I went to the dealer to get some problems looked at, and in a nutshell, it's going to be way too expensive to repair the Max ('95 SE w/118,000 miles and they're talking $3000+). So I'm looking for something else, not necessarily comparable (I'm thinking Jetta VR6 or GTI--drove them on Sunday, very fast, loaded and handle well) Any suggestions in the $20-25k price range? I've had 4 Max's now, so I'm ready to broaden my horizons... I'd miss you guys though!

mmm...GTI...make sure its a 1.8T
i guess size and room isn't a big deal then...if thats the case then the GTI would be my choice....they look good and have excellent modability (if thats what you want as well)...i personally don't like the looks of the Jetta so I won't comment....

akk...no Cruiser...at least with the 4 banger...wait until they come out with the GT (v6) then blow it...

A 6 would be nice... I just think it would be interesting because people said it handles pretty well stock, a blown v6 in that with some suspension upgrades would be a pretty sweet ride I think Plus at a $16k base price, you got spare cash to play with it.

1.8T vs. VR6 vs. Jetta

Okay, I'm getting conflicting reports about that. I know I can just throw in a chip on the 1.8T and bump up the hp to 200 just like that...but I also hear the addage that "there is no replacement for displacement" and that turbo engines are too prone to early self destruction, and I did like the the VR6--it's a beast in such a light(er) car--I didn't know it was as quick as it was.
And I know this sounds silly, but the reason I want the Jetta is because they now have as an option these LOVELY 17's and sports suspension. I know I can do that aftermarket, but...
And I cannot do the PT Cruiser!

120,000 mile service is about to come up. You add all that together, considering that most of it is just to diagnose it, and you can see why I'm about to get rid of it. I love the Max, I just need reliable transportation, and she's about to die...

Get a USED Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T >>>>
Very upgradeable in HP. Add a chip and get about 185 HP, add exhaust another 10-15 hp, bigger turbo K04 and intake manifold for about $1500 and get about 230 hp alone. With the bigger turbo, ehaust, chip it makes about 240 hp, with even larger turbos, of course more money, it can make over 300hp.

You can do the same with a Golf 1.8T. Golf is alot cheaper than an A4 plus it's lighter. You can pick up a brand new Golf 1.8T for around $20K. A new A4 is >$30K, even a used one is going to cost more than Golf.

Thanks for the opinions/suggestions for real...
Yeah, I keep hearing that same thing as far as getting the 1.8T. It's not ridiculously fast right stock, but with a little $$$ I can get it up faster than the VR6...but the VR6 GTI is LOADED with all kinds of sh*t--leather, trip computer, rain sensing wipers, wood trim, etc. I know those are just creature comforts, but I don't want to have regrets, you know? And the VR6 is 6.7 right now 0-60, so it ain't necessarily slow... I really do worry about reliability with the turbo too. What do y'all think about that??? Should I worry???

Did you have any mods? If you have any, you should probably sell the mods that you had instead of trading it in. Trading a car with mods doesn't get you any more $$.
If you need the space and don't mind the body style, go for the Jetta, but I think the GTI is a better choice.

As far as the Jetta vs. GTI, I guess it does come down to body style too. Americans just ain't hatchback people. But I do like that I don't see too many new GTIs as opposed to the 1000 Jettas you see daily...
