Catalytic Conveter

Sounds like your car has thrown a cel code and the shop doesn't have a clue as to what there taking about. If your unable to pull the codes yourself, take the car to your local Autozone and they will obtain the codes for you free of charge and tell you which part is malfunctioning. Usually its a sensor, such as an 02 sensor, but could be something else.
Also, I believe catalytic converter is a Federal Emission device, whereby Nissan provides a 7 year warranty on. I remember seeing that in our Nissan warranty booklet.

Thanks. But what is a cel code and how do you pull one?

Read this thread, it tells you how to get the error codes from your ECU. It also tells you how to turn the CEL light off.

Good luck, it's really easy.
P.S. Don't ever go back to the mechanic again.
