Cleaning the tranny

I have a 5spd tranny about to be installed, and a buddy has offered to steam clean it for me at a shop, but I may not have time to hand it over to him before the install.

I've seen engine cleaner at those do-it-yourself car washes....can I clean it with that? Is it safe to spray in the axle/flywheel areas??

If so, what's the procedure? Do I use a brush or no?

Thanks!

they used to use solvent tanks for that but now having a solvent tank is now illegal for EPA reasons. now we have these parts cleaners that seems to be like a soapy water based sink that has live bacteria in teh solution that feeds on oil-not kidding. and yes we have a soft nylon bristle brish we use on parts. after its all clean you have to dry the parts with either a cloth or air hose. We use steam cleaners for degreasing engines but im not shure if its safe for trannies because it might melt the plastic and rubber parts on it since the steam gets pretty hot. what im planning on using is some brakekleen on most of my parts
