Manual transmissions stink compared to autos.

autos do not suck, and are annoying at most when they shift when you dont want them to. and the only reason they are 'slower' is because you have 4 vs 5 gears in most manuals. now even 6. but with auto 5 and 6 gears coming up soon to be common that will all change. and don't say something sucks just because your transmission is wasted or you can't shift or whatever.

Thats just jealousy talking dude....An auto will NEVER be a stick, even with 5 gears, its still an auto, it still suffers from further drivetrain loss, they still lag...need i go on!? Most new cars (i.e. accord) that comes with a 5sp auto AND 5sp/6sp stick still vary greatly in performance times...why, because ones an auto and ones a stick
I can say one thing, for track racing purposes the auto is very consistent, esp when you get into the 11s and 12s. My last car was auto and it was so much easier at the track, when i went back with my max, it took lots of passes to get just my launch down, let alone all my shift points...About 35 passes later, im still stuck with a 15flat

Even many true automatics are quicker than thier manual counterparts. The F-Body comes to mind. While the autos don't post as high a mph as the manual, they typically get better ETs. Once you have a bunch of torque, the auto is by far the best way to have the quickest car.
With that said, the auto Maxima will always be slower, mod for mod, driver to driver. Those long gears and lack of torque really kill the autos performance, especially off the line.

Yup. Sequential shifters that use electronic clutches and still use the standard clutch/pressure plate config will be much faster than human shifint.
And you're 100% right. There's a reason why most/if not all serious drasters use automatics(or a version of them).
Donald. The only thing that stinks is your driving ability.

Not entirely true. Sequential shifters (SS) like in Ferraris and BMWs will be the wave of the future and will outperform a human behind the wheel. The BMW M3 SMG is only .2 off the manual and the Ferraris are actually quicker with the SS.

It's probably best that he's paralyzed, maybe he didn't feel the teeth on impact :cringe:

i knew someone would post about sequential shifters. Those could be the wave of the future, though i highly doubt they will trickle to the "bread and butter" sedans and cars anytime soon. What we may have is the ability to shift gears through the steering wheel (similar to the SMG M3) as in the new Grand Prix Comp G (similar to AutoStick, TipTronic, ShiftTronic, etc), but i highly doubt the sophisticated SMG will make their presence felt for a coupla more years to come.
Eventhough the SMGs are close in performance, its still an automatic. As far as pure driving pleasure, i feel a proper shifter just feels better, for me anyways. It makes me feel more intuitive with the car, as opposed to paddle shifters.

Anyway, it's probably not jealousy because all of us could have chosen a stick - I didn't out of laziness (and yo Sprintie - I've driven stick (and bikes) for a good part of my life, so some of us auto types can shift just fine, thanks
)To me it's kinda an all or nothing thing - if I buy a RWD sports car, it'll have a shifter attached. With a FWD family sedan (don't get me wrong, it's a FAST family sedan), you only get part of the answer with a manny. It's not like you can downshift and bring the rear end around, or otherwise get yourself out of (or into) trouble.
Just my opinion though, and for you guys that are having a good time with the 6-spd (or 5-spd) -

Racing a stock Automatic Maxima against a stock 5spd is like making Anna Nicole Smith try to play Serena Williams in a tennis match. One of them is going to get slaughtered, and probubly have a heart attack in the process.

You think your stock '99 automatic Maxima can take out my '95 SE Modded 5spd w/8psi of boost? Where's the darwin award when you need it? If we raced, i'd have time to stop by your house, tap your mom, and still win.

, leave it to craig to be an a$$hole...but anyways, some of you auto drivers get really defensive when some of us 5sp'ers joke around. Step back, relax and stop getting your panties in a knot. All were saying is that autos are slower mod for mod, period. Get over it, geez..

I have been out of this thread for a while...but...I swapped because it is no contest, I drove my auto max for 5 years, and always got my as$ handed to me by the same exact Maxima (the donor car) it was stock and in 5 speed trim at the time. My FULLY modded auto would get raped by about 7 cars from 0-60mph. I swapped and have not regreted it since...

I'd like to chime in....
I originally wanted a 5-speed conversion. Before I could source all of the parts, my auto died. After having a conversation with Rob and NRH Transmissions in Jessup, Md. I decided to keep the auto. Not stock however. Rob informed me that by converting to a 5-speed, I'm opening myself up to a load of problems...one of them being the differential bearings that so commonly go out on 5-speed Maximas. Instead, I opted to have a fully built performance auto transmission done by Rob himself.
My new transmission now has:
1. Kevlar clutches and bands
2. Heavy duty Hydraulic pump
3. VB recalibration (more aggressive than Max Tuning and Don's)
4. 2400rpm High Stall Torque Convertor
5. Posi Traction LSD
6. Chrome-Moly Driveshafts.
7. 3.48 Final drive ratio (Chosen for forced induction later)
*2400 rpm stall convertor was chosen as opposed to a 3000 rpm unit for low speed drivability purposes.
I don't think there is any 5-speed mod for mod that can hang.

How much did all that cost? If your auto goes out, you will lose basically almost all of that and start over. Also, you are still not putting down the extra power.
