AC problem

I bought a '95 max w/ digital temp controls in january and now that its hot out, i find my air doesn't get cold. I put it down to 65 degrees and it gets cool, but u can tell theres no AC. Anyone know what would cause this? Hopefully this is my last problem post on the forums. LONG LIVE THE MAXIMA

You can buy a can of r134 at Walmart for $5, and a cheap adapter to go with it. On the instructions, it will explain which valve to attach it to (I believe its the low valve on the AC, the one with the blue cap). You hook the adapter and can up to the low valve on the AC line. Then start you're car and turn on the AC. Now, open up the adapter's valve, to start the flow of R134a. Let you're car run for 20 min or so. If you have a digital themometer, put it in one of you're vents to see the temp go down. Its really simple, I do it every year to an older car we have....

one thing you should not attempt to self service is your cooling/heating system unless you really know what you are doing. nice run through though

yep, my ac teacher told me that working with ac systems is one of the most if not most dangerous to work with in the auto business. imagine that, 200 psi blowing up in your face

my ac is is acting up lately. I think I need a new AC condenser or whatever. I know the car has plenty of r134. Because I just had it filled. Looks like I'll be riding ithout AC for a little while.

just beacause it was once filled doesnt rule out the fact that there might be a leak and its all gone now. did the shop do a pressure test before filling? they should have

my friend filled it and tested it for leaks and everything. check all the fuses and couldn't find anythin wrong. I guess the AC Compressor is dead.

Or it could be overfilled. This is a safety feature to stop the compressor when there is too much pressure (I know this from personal experience). Does your compressor actually engage (meaning the pulley the belt goes around AND the center part shaped like a triangle spin when the AC is on)? The triangle shaped part in the center should cycle on and off. If it doesn't, it could be overfilled. Check the R134 pressure on the LOW side with a gauge. They're cheap at auto stores or Walmart. Should be somewhere around 24 psi if I remember right (but it varies slightly according to outside temp, but only by a few psi). Exact specs are in the FSM. If it is higher, you've got too much pressure, and the compressor won't engage. This will result in no cooling. Sucks in the south.

That might be it. Because he said the Compressor wasn't engaging at all.

Damn, I just found out mine isn't working too. Where should I go to get a pressure test and refilling of r134 or whatever and how much does it usually cost?

dont quite remember the cost of the r134 but its shure alot cheaper than r12 thats for shure. any ac or some tuneup shops should have the guages. what they might do is to jump the compressor relay to see if it does work. I dont know about maximas but alot of cars have something called a short cycle switch which will detect low refrigerant levels and will not allow the compressor to turn on and destroy itself due to no lubrication

Oh and this thread should probably be made a sticky since we have no search and there will probably be many of these posts being made soon.
