Bleeding the Brake System
Bleeding the Brake System
Ok... I've done countless break jobs on vehicles with discs in the front and drums in the rear, but I've always done them one axle at a time. This past weekend I did a break job on my wife's car, which is 4-wheel disc. After I was done with both axles I bleed the system. I did the front first, starting with the driver's side because I've always been told that's where you start since it's the closest to the master cylinder. Then I did the passenger front. On the rear I did the driver's side then the passenger. Well when I did the road test I thought the breaks felt "spongy". Well, upon doing some net surfing, I found that I got the sequence wrong. Apparently with 4-wheel disc you're supposed to do a cross sequence when doing bleeding. But it seems that there is some confusion as to the sequence. Some say start with the closest wheel to the master cylinder and others say start with the furthest then use a cross pattern. Which is correct???
LF, RR, RF, LR????
or
RR, LF, LR, RF????
Another thing that threw me for a loop was that some sites suggested pressing the break pedal to the floor when opening and closing the bleeder valve while others said only press the break pedal halfway down??? They sites that said to only depress halfway said that depressing all the way to the floor would allow air back into the system which I can't understand how that would happen. I was always taught to press the pedal to floor.... now I'm even more confused....
Can anyone here tell me the proper way to bleed the system for a 2000 Maxima???
