how to change brake pads?

ok, i'm gonna take a stab at this myself and see if i can finally do something on my own. My back passenger side wheel squeels like hell and has been doing it for past 3 days. I was going crazy trying to figure out what the problem was and after realizing that the rim on that rotor was much dirtier than the rest, i looked at the brake pad and its like basically dead.

Can anyone show me a write up on how to change this brake pad?

Also how much is the brake pad and what do some of you recommend?

Would i be ok going to autozone to get brake pads or should i go straight to nissan and get raped knowin i'm getting the real deal? hope to replace this tomorrow.

its not very difficult i used the writup on the website called something like motervateca or something, i dont have the link on this computer though. there are 4 bolts i think 19mm and 17mm or around that. i just pulled off the caliper and the pads pop out basically by themselves. there is a metal clip type thing that holds the pads in there. then just reverse the process. i had to leave off one of the metal pieces that was on there to get the caliper back on, its a very tight fit.

good luck

that's the for the front brakes only tho

hey mecca, i'm about to do my rears too... but i have experience in doing the first.

http://photos.p0wned.net -under "spring break" and i think the album name has the date and "brake-caliper" labeled. I took a bunch of pics of my friend and I attempting it... could give u some inspiration lol

Might I suggest you get the Nissan brake hardware kit so or at least make sure u put anti-squeel glue between the back of the pads and the shims. Good luck! lemme knwo if u need any help.

Rears are the same, except turn the piston in instead of compressing it like the fronts.

Yep, make sure you get the tool to compress the rear piston and don't just force it. Otherwise, I recommend genuine Nissan OEM pads, not the cheap ones. Most of the stuff with the car I don't find to be cost-effective in my situation (time spent on the car = time not spent on the house/lawn or partying or caring for the dog), but brake pads are a no brainer. If you fool around with getting cheap or high-performance pads and they squeal, that throws my theory out the window, you end up doing 2 or 3 brake jobs. My first time up front I left out 1/2 of the shims and the OEM pads still never squealed. Good luck.

and you have to remove the 12 mm bolt that is underneath the connection from the caliper to the emergency brake. that and you gotta remove the ebrake cable.

if you have a stick shift.. put rocks in the front wheels and park in gear.

Piston is pretty hard to turn.. so (1) get yourself a caliper tool. (2) leave the container open that you refil the brake fluid with.

What he said... needle nose pliers can be a real PITA to use if your piston is slightly stuck.

That caliper tool looks something like this:

You stick a ratchet into it to turn the piston. Just find the face that fits into the piston & turn away. Just make sure your piston boot doesn't get snagged on the side. The tool works like a dream!
