There it was, the ultimate sleeper, and my heart raced. I splurged today and decided to finagle the audi dealer into making me a SWEET deal on a 2001 Audi S4. Don't get me wrong, the maxima is still around, but i can't believe what kind of power and take off is to be had with this car! The only thing left now to do is decide on plates worthy of such a car.......thinking of slpr/sleepr.!?

:-) If you guys ever get a chance to drive one of these....do...and if your at a light with one....don't!!

You better be gentle with that S4 for a while. Keep it under 4000RPM for the first 1000 miles, to break the engine in properly. After that, look out!

Sleeper S4

It might be more of a sleeper if you removed the S4 badges; that's what I would do.

Negaro blue

is the color...just happened to be the one on the lot, with all the options i wanted too! yea, i've been gentle with it but even below 4000rpm's the dual siquential turbo's have already kicked in(spool at a very low 1600rpm's). Funny thing is i never would have know what an S-4 is or the performance under the hood. Im glad i didn't find out the hard way! Still LOVE the way my Max looks and still plan on cruising in it. Just can't wait to kill those hmmm lemme see almost anything i want!!!(mustang gt's,si's,civics, integras, and the list goes on and on)

I would not be too aggresive on the plate picking.
I mean it's a fast car, low 14's stock, low 13's chip/exhaust. But cars are getting faster now days, low 13's is still just on par with stock C5 and E46M3 likes.

Thus unless you plan to only pick on family sedans(like a maxima), I wouldn't imply speed/fast with the plate.

woodear really?

i know it specs a 0-60 in 5.6 something.....does that factor out to be a 14sec quarter mile? Maybe we aren't even talking about the same car? Maybe i don't know what im talking about? But i have read and heard several people reviewing the car and well, basically they say it kicks ***, read about it, you'll find what i have!

i think this

http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caran...rt.xml?&page=5

pretty much answers my question, im just not familiar with quarter mile times as many. Don't get me wrong, i think you and me both know this car isn't just a "family sedan" killer. But this i can say.....5.6 turns me on!!!!

Actually, the turbos aren't sequential. Each turbo is fed from three cylinders and are combined together before entering the intake manifold. As someone else suggested, lurk on audiworld.com for good info about the car and what you can do with it.

First thing I suggest is the UUC short-shifter. It's the way Audi should have made it in the first place. The UUC is adjustable for 20/30/40% reduction in throw. Next bang for the buck would be a chip. GIAC and MTM are the favorites. MTM exhaust is regarded as the best, but also most expensive. Borla/Neuspeed sound similar but is a good bit cheaper. Most say don't bother messing with the intake.

hey maxhawk!!!

why is it that different chips produce different horsepower for the same amount.....i have seen that for around 600 bucks im looking at anywhere from 50 to 65hp?! Shouldn't i opt for the 65 hp gain for the same amount? And also, what else will i HAVE to do if i do a chip? is it that easy or are there other mandatory mods when u chip it? BTW, i checked out your ride on your site, looks tight, i can't wait for the low 13's and 0-60's in 5 flat!!!! Thanks for your help and info. See ya around!

The biggest difference in the various chips is the amount of peak boost. Most peak around 1.1 bar (vs. 0.7 stock). They all put you in the 300HP range. The difficulty comes in trying to measure the horsepower. There are very very few 4 wheel dynos around the country, and on the last comparison it seems the dyno was broken (165HP at the wheels for stock...34% drivetrain loss??). Most of the horsepower numbers are estimates based on the performance and weight of the car. See http://www.europeanspeed.com/shootout.htm for the chip comparison.

Some people claim that certain chips are smoother than others. You'll need to find some people with different chips to see if you can tell a difference. I've been very happy with my Garrett chip.

You don't really have to mod anything to take advantage of a chip. But an aftermarket exhaust will help to open up the top end & allow the engine to rev up a little quicker. The stock exhaust seems to restrict the engine above 5500 RPM. Plus the chip moves the rev limiter up to 7100.

To answer your question, the most boost isn't necessarily the best. It's simply a matter of reliability and how that boost is supplied. If you stick with the major names (Garrett/MTM/APR) you'll probably be OK. APR is relatively a newcomer, though I'm not bashing them, Garrett and MTM have been in the business longest and have the best reputation.

Congrats on your S4, suggested plates

From my wife when we were considering an A4...

"INNIE" (AUDI)

(AUDI) "DOODY"

My favorite, from thr German word for power "MACHT 1"

Hope you enjoy your S4. I've always thought it interesting how many Max owners aspire to Audi's. Let us know what it's like on the other side....

I have seen bone stock S4's pull low 14's. With the best being a 13.9. This is completely stock. Watch out for the new M3 though...low 13 second car.
