Fuel Additives?

Anybody have any opinions about fuel tank additives such as Injector Cleaner, Fuel System Cleaner, Octane booster, etc... I used to use them in my old.. american car.. and they seemed to smooth things out a bit, but I'm debating whether or not to use them in my 98 SE

Don't do it. They're all crap.

The ones that say they improve mileage just plain don't. The ones that claim to clean *MAY* do it, but may also leave gummy residue behind creating more of a problem later.

And before the haters start:
njmaxseltd, did you get 30mpg because of the mystery oil or because you took a long trip on the highway?
slavik'sMAX, quantify "seems".
NikaL, why do you use the additive?

So, if you don't believe me they're all crap, try searching for FTC and fuel additive and see how many lawsuits companies have quietly settled because their claims are either unsubstantiated or outright false.

it's real, it's snake oil (figuratively, not factually), and dupes buy it all the time.

for some claims about their products...

The only thing to ever use is the stuff you can get from a shop or a dealer. Yes the dealers use an additive to clean injectors that aren’t Real bad. Anything else is just crap and a waste of money.
I'll be at my buddies shop tomorrow; I'll get the name of the stuff he uses and let you know.

Uhhh... I drove to Canada (Mont Tremblant, near Montreal) from NJ and got 33mpg, no additives, only an oil change and a full tank of gas. It was winter though. I also drove from Virginia Tech to Bridgewater, NJ (~450 miles) on a single tank of gas and still had enough gas to run a few errands and let my cousin floor it around the neighborhood for a mile or so. That was earlier this month.

I swear, the Max has the widest range of fuel efficiency ever. I've recorded everything from 17mpg to 33mpg with no mods in between, just driving habits.

I use Techron Concentrate at every oil change. To the best of my knowledge, Techron's claims have never been challenged by the FTC.

FYI, Techron remains the only "unofficially" approved fuel additive for Nissan Maximas.

I basically agree that there is a lot of crappy products out there, for example Z-Max. But there are also good products.
How much you need them? It's hard to say but some experiments done by members of this site show why you may need fuel system cleaners.

There is some good info regarding effectiveness of some of the most popular OTC fuel system/injector cleaners in this other thread too.

Nissan does not endorse any fuel additives, while other companies (BMW, Toyota, GM) have recommended products or carry their own line of products. Nissan's position is kind of $hitty since it leaves owners wondering which product would be the safest to use in our cars.

Here is the web page for all the additives you will need under most circumstances. B&G Products, Inc.
Also the main product to use for routine cleaning is: BG 44K® Advanced Formula
This is good to use for cleaning the TB: BG Air Intake System Cleaner

It means that a senior manager in NNA's technical division has indicated that Techron is safe to use in Nissan Maximas. But the individual prefers to remain anonymous and I will honor his request.
