you can get a manual, if it was an option for me id have a 5spd. get an se, forth gen is more affordable and lighter than the 5s, but i was recently in a 2000 which was really nice. the 00 and 01s are more hp but heavier so they are pretty much the same performance wise to the 4s, if you can afford a 02 or 03 more power to you, they are fast. i personally dont like the 00+ body style.

good luck

There will be a lot of biased opinions. Just know this:

1) Your budget will dictate your choices.
2) You should do some research ... you can get a manual or an automatic.
3) 4th gens only has the 3.0 L, 5th gens had an engine change midway through. What do you want? Do you like variable intake? Enough or too much power? FWD & torque steer.
4) Different body styles, different interior, what's your style?

Do yourself a favor, don't get a car solely on posts to this thread (though use it to its fullest to know more about the vehicles). Test drive all your choices, see the one that appeals the most to you and go with that. You will be the driver, not the org.

At the end, you will still drive a Maxima.

(4th gens are lighter than 5th gens with the same engine choice). Might be some comments on manual transmission concerns to follow.

The reason I suggested a 01 5psd is because there are a lot of mods avail for it. Turbo, SC. No real power mods avail for the 02-03 except nos..

I own a 4th gen. and my twin brother has a 5th gen. so I get to drive each car everyday. As much as I hate to say this, GO WITH A 5TH GEN. I always talk abou how awesome manual tranny 4th gens are, but thats becuase 5spd VS 5spd, I like the 4th gen better. There's just that special something about a nicely kept and maintained 5spd 4th gens.. HOWEVER, its gonna be your GRADUATION GIFT. Get a 5th gen. You wont regret it.

Stay away from stock GXE's (especially 95-to some 01's that have ugly hubcaps and granny rims) stick to a 97-04SE if you want the sporty look out of the box!

When you say graduation, are you graduating from high school, college, or law school? Why are you choosing a maxima? You are implying that you have $7000-$22000 for a car when you say what generation. With a decent budget like that, there are plenty of choices. If this were 1997 the Maxima was good bang for buck and there were only a few choices for roughly 200 hp and a manual tranny. Today the alternatives list is longer than Kobe Bryant's arm. If you must have a Max I'd go 98+ to rule out odo tampering. But there will be some stuff that needs attention. Good luck.

actually 95 GXE is the lightest max outta all 4th and the 5th.. and they have less emission restriction. so u'll get a bit of advantage there =)

Get a 5 speed manual in either.
Get a SE in either.
Add aftermarket shocks & springs 2 either.(this leaves granny at the supermarket)

4th Gen Manual, SE add shocks and springs..your set !!
or 5th Gen Manual 2002,2003 more HP

Like I said add shocks and springs and you are ready to roll !

manual 6 spd 2002 max would be my choice. Or, you could buy an impreza wrx! Stick with the max though.

The most non-granny looking Maxima in my opinion is the 2001 Anniversary edition - it's comes stock with a body kit from the factory, has bronze-tinted headlights, polished 17" rims, drilled metal pedals, and a few other goodies. Oh yeah, it's got all the good stuff SE's have too, like the smoked tail lights and spoiler and stuff. Definitely not looking like a granny in that one, but they are a bit hard to find, since they were a limited edition.

the '02-'03 might be faster...but when I drove the 5th gen I realized there is something about the 4th gen that the 5th gen cant compare to.

Well because they are much cheaper than the 2k2 and 2k3 now.

Even though the 95-2001 all have the same engine the 4th gen is still a step down from the 2000-2001. and besides every one and their mom owns a 4th gen now. dime a dozen.
no offense 4th genners-its still one damn good car.
