cheap/rice shift ***** vs expensive momo type *****...what are the cons?

What are the cons to buying one of those cheap, fleamarket shift ***** that look good as opposed to buying a high end momo (or some other expensive company) ****? My stock 4th gen GXE **** is horrible, and it needs to be replaced. I will be looking for a relatively short ****...but what else makes these cheaper ***** terrible?
Thanks

When I had my shifter shortened, I bought a cheap universal fit ($15) carbon fiber wannabe shift **** until I can find that perfect one...I have found that it doesn't fit perfect (well enough for driving, but has eventually loosened up some so that it will turn a little on the shifter) and the carbon fiber (look alike) outer layer has chipped in a few places...I now wish that I had saved my money and bought a good one (like MOMO) to begin with...but that is just my experience and opinion

They look good? Most of the cheap ones I see look like the plastic cell-phone candy-holding toy/candy-dispensing devices they sell at Kay Bee Toys.

My spherical polished aluminum **** for the acura was $30 from teamvoodoo. Is that really expensive? It was quality, directly threads in instead of some jank universal screw mount, and looked nice to me. They and a number of other companies make shift ***** for Miatas, which have the same thread length as the maxima. Why spend $80 for a momo when you can find other quality aftermarket for less than half that?

USUALLY a shiftknob is a 1 time investment... you'll be feeling it constantly when driving and u will have to look at it everyday. Don't cheap out on it... I saved and forked the $80 for my momo ****, and i am HAPPY. No fading in the CF or any of that bs. it's been 2 years w/ it and no problems. I don't plan on changing that **** for the rest of the car's life so yeah, i thought it was an expensive buy, but well worth it.

agreed with nadir... i've had a cheap pep boys shift **** and it sucked. it constanly came loose and one time at the track it actually separated on a shift. i bought an all aluminum momo **** and i love it. its a little heavy making the shifts feel solid. there may be some cheaper than Momo, but if you can afford one, i would def. recommend it.

What you chaps are saying makes sense. I will invest in a decent ****.

blizz20oma, I figured most decent ***** cost around 80+ usd...but if that is not the case, I better start hunting for a less expensive, well made ****.

the momo's normally feel better when shifting and are snug on the shift ****, they normally dont come loose and fall off like the cheap kind. Plus the material they use and the way they make the shift **** makes them last a lot longer. I also realized that stock ***** are also great.

I really like my momo short anatomico!
Its all black leather and really comfy. It is also on teh cheap side for a momo.
If you get metal on it, it gets REAL hot during summer and burns you.
just fyi

I guess it depends on finding a look you can dig. Me, I liked the polished aluminum sphere look, but probably too simple for others.

But it could still be worth taking some time to search for Miata shift *****, because there's a lot of MX-5 enthusiasts/products out there.

The place I bought mine above from was www.teamvoodoo.com

Yep, investing in a good **** is definetly worth it. I personally got the 20th anniversary shifter from the 2001 A.E. Maxima and I really like it. I gave my GF the MOMO Combat carbon fiber **** I had before and bought her the MOMO boot to go along with it. She loves it and I have to say that it does look really nice.

look at the JDM Z32 **** on courtesy's site.. I bought one a couple of weeks ago and love it. MUCH better than the cheapo aluminum/CF one I had on there begore. shifts are smooth and solid, where the other one cause the shifts to be jerky and I'd often miss a shift when racing...

Matt you have an STS? I love kalebs shift know, is that the same one you are talking about? If so is it a perfect fit or does it tend to loosen? If that is the one you are talking about I might have to order one this week from him

My shifter is a "modified" factory ****.. I rearranged the parts so that it's a tad shorter than the STS shifter, then I've got the Z32 shift ****. very firm feel. only problem I've had is that the know loosened up and when I tightened it again, it doesn't sit straight. that's just a matter of sticking some plastic or something in there to take up some of the room.
