Metal Master pads and rust?
Metal Master pads and rust?
I switched to Metal Master pads in the fall and they were good through the winter. Now since the spring they've began to squeal a bit and if they're ever wet when I park and the car sits for a day or two the pads rust and bind to the rotors (rears with emergency brake on). It takes a pretty good rev of the engine to break them loose sometimes, makes me flinch whenever it happens, sounds painful, wondering if it's doing any damage? Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? Thanks

Rust on the discs are normal. The discs are made of iron not stainless steel.

Okay, so my first thought was to answer, "So don't take your max out in the rain". But really, I have standard pads and I have the same problem if the car sits for 4-5 days without moving. Why it happens to you so quickly might be based on what condition your rotors are in. Did you have them turned when you put on the MetalMaster pads ? You will probably have to replace the rotors next time anyway, but you should probably have them turned whenever you change pads (at least that is what my mechanic, who does not do my brakes, said).

Rotors will rust. You can paint the non-contact portions to keep them looking good. The portions of mine where the pad contacts will rust within an hour after using rim cleaners. No big deal, it's gone on my first braking.
Sounds like your rear pads aren't sticking to your rotor, but your parking brake is not fully disengaging. This can be from the cable rusting a little in the sheath, or just being dirty. When you give it gas, it overcomes the rust/dirt resistance, and will release with a "pop" sound. It is free to check the parking brake cable, and it is a common problem. Definitely worth checking.

Very good point, as I have had this problem with two previous cars. Assuming you use the parking brake (since some people do not), try not using it and see if the problem goes away. Oh, and if you do not use it, it is actually MORE important that you keep the cable clean as it WILL stick when you really need it (Murphy's Law of Cars #72).
