WHY is the FASTest MAX not faster???
Why has no one gone faster than 11.9 in a Maxima? Don’t get me wrong I think it is a VERY respectable time but I think there is more in the Maxima than that. Mardigras ran on slicks right? It seems like someone should own a Max that can go 12.0 on drag radials. I know FWD is a b!tch to launch but is it that big of an obstacle that we haven’t even seen low 11s from a Max yet? Is it because not enough people go the “whole 9 yards” with a Maxima??? People just don’t “hook up” our cars up often enough? Are turbos too new and we just haven’t seen their potential yet?
I just find it hard to believe that faster times haven’t been had yet. Every other tuner car I know of there is a group of people running faster times than 11.9. We actually have hardly any people hitting 12s....Just wondering if anyone else is thinking along the same lines as me..........

mardigras trapped 117 mph though, which should be good for a low low 11 second pass. He doesn't power shift because he doesn't want to break his tranny. Nobody else with a maxima can touch his power and mph. It takes alot of power to run that fast. No one has spent the money to open up the engine yet really. Mardigras is working on an engine project with the 3.5 liter engine right now, which should make more power and especially more torque. He could run 10's if it was a race car that was completely gutted, but he still drives it every day. The other imports that run some much faster are not real cars, they are race only.
#4
I think it is the lack of aftermarket support, lack of money, or other things. I think it is only time untill we see some fast *** max's. I would like to see someone completely gut a max and see what it could run.
#6
Because no one wants to waste money on a maxima to go 11s when they could put another import in the 10s, or a domestic in the 9s for the same amount of money. BTW the maxima is not a tuner car.

whats the fastest Accord?
fastest Camry??
fastest TL?
fastest Passat?
we're really not in a bad state with 11s in a Maxima
its FWD, long, not too stiff... not very light weight next to those CRXs and Civics... and it was just not designed, nor is the aftermarket big enough for custom everything
be happy, be unique

Plus the maxima is supposed to be a luxury sedan (here we go again). All these cars being sooped up to run 10's, 11's, and some 9's are all sports cars or what everyone would think to be sports cars. You dont see any impala's on the track running low scores or taurus's...well atleast i dont...

to answer what i meant by "groups of people" running 12s and lower i will say that every time i have been to the track i have seen a 12 sec or less Honda/Acura or another sport compact. i raced a 12 and a half sec integra @ 8psi(nothin extraordinarily special) last time i went. i have never seen a 13 sec Max at the track. i have only seen a handful of 14 sec Maximas. carnal_c30 makes a good point though. the Max is not a sport compact car.I just think more people should be hooking them up i guess but at the same time i love the uniqueness. ha. i want more people to see what i see in the Maxima but i like the fact that noone but us hooks them up. theres an oxymoron for ya.

in all honesty:
If you make a Maxima that fast, it is not too "streetable" and it kind of ruins the point of having a Maxima (Reliable, Comfortable, Luxury, Sporty, etc...) is it all about the straight line?
If so, Maxima is not the way to go, just get a 3500lb stang that will spin out on the first turn but run 7's in the 1/4.

Why not? Matt's car is street legal. It just runs slicks at the track. He'll probably run 11's on street legal radials soon.
Street legal is very loosely defined. My friend's Supra runs 10.3 @ 144 on "street tires". Sure they're M/T Streets which are pretty much slicks w/ some grooves in there, but technically the car is street legal. He takes it out once in a while, it's got a muffler, and most of the interior.

Right, I was saying that he did the run on slicks. But it's not a far stretch for him to do it on drag radials which would make the car street legal. I know guys that drive in gutted cars every single day.

I could make my mustang run 7's and have it be street legal, but I wouldnt go faster than 9's on a personal note.
The only thing I have to worry about with my mustang is noise, that is the only thing they can ticket me for, and technically not even that due to my collector plates.
there are tricks
btw, I'd be proud to have a 14 second maxima, 12's are awesome, 11's are hardcore, hell 12's are hardcore, blah, sleepy time.

keep in mind Matt's (and everyone else) car is a Daily Driver, in fact matt doesn't even have a beater! the point is there are much better platforms to start with when you investing mega $ in a track car.

Personally, I don't think there is a ton of Maxima's running as fast or faster than Matt because:
1. Most members here don't have his will power or ambition
2. Most members are too scared to test out new things
3. Not enough money to get wild
4. Don't have another car to drive in case the Maxima is down for a while.

That's the thing, no one really knows. As DA-Max says, word is Hal is running mid 12's, but we don't have any proof. Not that I'm doubting him, but until it can be confirmed like Matt's runs, it doesn't count.
Other than him, no turbo maxes have really run at the track. Did Nigel? Not sure.
Hopefully the turbo guys will start running soon. I think there's just still so few of them that it will be a while before we get a lot of numbers. Guess I'll just have to get my turbo finished sooner and put up some numbers

I can add a #6 also:
6. What person thought, "I'm going to buy a Maxima to make it run 11's in the 1/4?"
A lot of people just bought the car because its great for what it is and its reliable as hell. Perfect highway car also.
I can honestly say that when I bought my Max, I was going to go with a full exhaust setup for more power. I didn't want to car to look too good because at that time I lived in a bad area of Boston but I mainly did have dreams of getting more power out of it.

Very good point.
W/ Supras, Eclipses, Hondas/Acuras, a lot of people buy them for the express purpose of racing them. Whether it be SCCA, 1/4 mile, they plan to race them. You always see questions on their forums about which car they should get for drag racing, which platform is better, and so on. I don't think I've ever seen that question here.
I don't think there are many 4 dr. family sedans running 11's. 4 dr. Civics and Integras don't count, mods are the same as the 2 drs.

Shadow: And this is why I'm trying to make up my mind between owning a SC400, 240SX or a GN/GNX. I'm keeping the Max because I love it but I would have a lot more fun modding these cars because the gains wouldn't be so small.

Very true. I'm the last person to knock the Maxima performance aftermarket, but it just costs so much relative to those other cars. I mean, my friend is swapping a built SR20DET motor/tranny into his 240SX, and getting an upgraded turbokit and turbo for less money than it's costing me to just custom build a turbo setup. Once he's done, that' 400 hp at the wheels. And I'm seeing Supras, DSM's, and WRX's pushing so much power for not a huge amount of money. Frustrating, sometimes I just want to sell the car and get something different. But then again, easy isn't always fun.
