Upgrading suspension: need help...

What do you call those black things that cover
the struts from dirt and pebbles? I need to
replace them since they are ripped.

And if I'm changing the shocks and springs as well,
what else do I need to replace in the front? Normally ,do I need to replace
the coil covers that protect the springs from rubbing against
the shocks? Are they called coil covers?

Those are dust boots, mainly they just prevent noise and scraping of the spring against the strut. Springs come with their own "covers" but you may wish to additionally put coil wire loom on the lower part of the spring to reduce any possible noise. Some say it helps, some don't. You can get away just fine with just springs and shocks, but make sure your strut bearings are good and if you are ambitious, you can change the endlink bushings on your front sway bar.
