My maxima(1993) was overheated yesterday and the coolant was gone. After I added the coolant, it became normal.

I checked the mechanic today, the problem is water pump (my car has the squealing noise once a while near the belts since last week) and the hoses have crack(s). The mechanic told me that the coolant is leaking when the car is overheated because of the failing water pump and cracks on the hoses.

I have two questions:

1. Is the explaination reasonable? Do I need repair the water pump ASAP?

2. The total price for the repair is $516,
water pump: $73.95
hose (upper and lower): $62.46
B*Pass: $19.98
Antifreeze and clamps: $30:00
Labor:$330(6 hours)

Is the price too expensive? Some suggestions?

i had a similar problem with my water pump in my 95....it was a very expensive fix cause its so hard to reach it - i remember paying about 600 bucks all together

 

If the price is reasonbale, I will repair it monday since I really do not hurt the engine.

The labor is really expensi

 

The reason for this is that the water pump is in the timing cover. Its not like a Domestic where its under the fan or an external part. Price seems alright.

But Why does the water bump fail to work? is it related to the cooling system?

 

Seeing you have a 93 it can happen. It gets corroded and fails.

 

The water pump seals deteriorate from heat and wear over time. The water pump Pumps (moves) water from engine to radiator and back, the movement of water is controlled by engine speed and the thermostat. Hot water from engine is pumped to radiator where it is cooled and then returns to engine to maintain optimum operating temperature. Water pumps do not go bad that often on Maximas but make up for it by being expensive to replace. Have your mechanic replace the thermostat along with the pump and hoses while he has it all apart.

 

Anyone know the best place to find a detailed (pictured if not a film online) process of replacing the water pump?
