how does tint affect radar detectors?
how does tint affect radar detectors?
alright, I really ask this question because i have 50% tint all around (including front windshield). I remember the first time i wanted a $100-$150 radar detector but scrapped the idea because I heard tint will block laser/radio or whatever.
What do you guys think? I don't think it should REALLY be a problem because those V1 detectors have a 360 detection and most people have tint in their car.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure what kind of tint I have on the car, as it came w/ it when I bought the car. I will contact the previous owner later to confirm... but he told me he only got it to filter out UV and all that junk in order to protect the leather/dash inside.
Thanks for any feedback on this.

My V1 works fine with the rear sensor while driving past speed traps or those things that the police set up that tell you your speed. And my windows are 20% all around, 5% rear window.

From what I heard and experienced. Radars have a hard time going through tint. At least my 5% tint. It's better now since it got stollen. Escort Passport 8500. I'm looking into this http://www.escortradar.com/srx.htm.

That is why I use in-dash radar/laser. They mount either on your license plate or hidden behind the grill.
Since my car is 35% up front, 30% front windshield, 15% rear windows, & 15% rear windshield, it has killed the use of my EZPass. The EZPass never reads. I usually have to hold it out the window and even so, hald the time it doesn't register.

Yep, I have read atricles warning you not to use the detector with tint as it effects it's range.

I've heard bad things about the cobra. I have 20% all around save the front and I've caught plenty a po coming from behind with my Escort. Find a friend who works at Best Buy, they retail for 289 but you can get em for 200 with the employee discount
I have reflective charcoal tint (solargard) and one day i pulled into wal-mart and the 8500 was going crazy (becuase of the automatic doors). So anyway, I pulled into a parking spot, and pulled off the 8500 from the windshield, and was holding it facing the doors of walmart with the windows closed. Then, while still holding it facing the doors, i rolled the window down, and the detector signal strength bar increased in intensity which goes to show the tints DO affect 360 transmission regardless of whether your windshield is tinted or not. it works out though since you will receive most radar gunning from the front.
