tranny whining while engine braking

5speed- Is it normal to hear a whining noise while engine braking in 1st and 2nd gear? then again my tranny only has like 2 quarts of fluid left but just wondering.

Mine did this right before a major leak at the input shaft. Why are you down to 2 quarts of fluid? Do you have a leak?

My whine was caused by bad mainshaft bearings.

Re: tranny whining while engine braking

ever hear gears whining because of low lubrication? I would say your gear box is doing the same thing. A friend of mine had an Isuzu Amigo and one snow storm he engaged 4wd and locked the front hubs. It whined like crazy. He got back from the shop a week later and said the diff had little fluid left. Wonder where it went...

im leaking because I have mysterious leak comming out of my passanger side axle. I guess its from the gears being not lubes. hope so

There ya go...it sounds like you have a failed differential bearing. That would explain the whine. Now prepare to pay lots of money (or sweat) to have it fixed. I did a mixture (removed the tranny myself, had a shop do the bearing R/R).

well I dont know since I had the tranny checked out internally before I put it on and also I think its whining because theres not enough fluid in there. theres no play in the axles so I really dont know why its leaking.

There's no play in the axle? Hmm...maybe it's just a bad seal, then.

we already tried 2 new seals and 2 axles (dealer installed both seals and 1 axle) so this is why were so stumped. dealer mechanic says it looks like the axle is going in at an angle and pushing against the seal.

Sounds like the bearing...check the play in the bearing.
