Did I Just Mess Up My Transmission?
I was driving my automatic and little did I know my friend was auto shifting for me and at 20-25mph it is in 2nd and I am not applying any gas and all of a sudden he drops it back to 1 and the car suddenly slows down hard. Did I do any damage?

i downshift to 2nd to take a turn now and again. and i will upshift through all my gears, 1,2,D. but try not to downshift into 1st if your going over 10mph, or try to avoid it altogether.
your transmission is fine though, just dont make a habit of it.
o yeah, charlie horse his a$$ in the arm, and next time do it to his car

how do you downshift an auto, is it bad to that will any prolong engine or bad effects to the engine or drive components. also if you manual upshift an auto, is it by press gas and lightly let go of the gas pedal and press it again correct? on autos is there a certain rpm or speed u can manual upshift or if you do it manually at certain speed will it do any damage of any sort

grab the lever and throw it down to the next gear closest towards you, you've just down shifted.
before you start playing around with it, know what the top of each gear it. yes the tranny has a fail safe and whatnot, but this will help you figure out when it is handy and when your just wasting time because it will want to upshift as soon as you down shift. for instance, my old VE, I would call the top of first 40mph (had more, but just gave me more head room) and the top of second 80mph (again, with more room), I never topped out 3rd, but I was riding 115mph at 5300rpm or so (its been well over a year).
As for spinning the engine too much, we all have different comfort zones, but I spun my VE at redline for a few miles on the highway in 2nd, just to find that it isnt fun with out the engine pulling, and at a school car show I kept it pegged between 6000 and redline with one drop to 5800rpm, for about 3 minutes, no one else had the ***** I guess, lol, just being a teenager I guess.
I look at engines as If I break them, they werent strong enough, and I havent broken a Nissan Engine yet.

I went through 3 cluthes in 4 months on my mustang
I shattered the stock cluth from 2 much HP
The second one "an SVT clutch" broke in 7 pieces when my floor mat got stuck under the gas pedal ...
the 3rd "a centerforce clutch" after 2 months of engine braking, or so I was told because the engine had to much power. They replace the SVT and Centerforce clutch for free but I also shortly upgraded to a T56 tranney and it never happened again.
P.S I warped the flywheel when breaking the SVT
